100 Years Ago – July 4, 1919
Phillip Peters is home on a furlough, from Camp Mills, N. J. He enlisted about two years ago, and served on the borders of Mexico and then sent to France, and now in back in the States. Phillip was quite a kid when he joined, but is almost a grown-up man now. He was one of the first soldiers to volunteer from our county.
LOUISVILLE: Mr. Journey, owner of the Liberty Theatre, will put on a good picture this afternoon from 2 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. for the benefit of the old soldiers, and will be free to every one of them. - The soldier boys are returning home rapidly now. Friends of Bess Files, Earnest Hill, and Oscar Thompson, and Dee White were glad to see them Wednesday. - Mr. Hunter of Mashulaville spent a day here this week and gives a gloomy account of the crop prospects over the country he has recently traveled. He says where the cotton is of any size the weevils are taking it. - Mr. E. S. Baker of Warren, Ark. is visiting his son J. W. Baker here this week. - Mr. and Mrs. Romeo Melton of Memphis are visiting the latter’s parents, Mr. and Mrs. M. G. Ray. - Mr. and Mrs. Underwood of Helena, Ark. are visiting their brother, J. E. Glover and family. - Mrs. W. A. Price of Meridian was called here for the funeral of her brother, J. B. King. - Dr. Montgomery reports a fine boy born to Mr. and Mrs. H. B. Buford on the 1st inst.
DEATHS: Mr. James B. King, 47, passed away at his home June 27th, after a few weeks confinement to his bed. His remains were interred in Masonic Cemetery Sunday. Mr. King had been in failing health for some time, having undergone an operation in Baptist Hospital at Memphis recently, but failed to relieve him. He gradually grew weaker until the final end came, leaving a devoted wife and seven children. Jim King was a clever man, an indulgent father, and a splendid neighbor.
MARRIAGES: Mr. Roy Fox, Winston County native now in Brandon, and Miss Lucile McMullan were married at the Methodist Church, Hickory, Miss., June 29th. The reception was at the home of the bride’s parents, Mr. and Mrs. Thomas McMullan. - Loyd Horne arrived here a few days ago, accompanied by a charming bride that he found in North Carolina. They will spend a short time with Mr. Horne’s parents, Mr. and Mrs. W. L. Horne, and then return north. - Mr. Neal Prisock, Superintendent of Education, was married to Miss Ellen Bradley, daughter of Rev. J. A. Bradley of Jackson, last Wednesday at the Methodist Church in Cleveland, Miss., Rev. W. S. Shipman of Ruleville officiating.
75 Years Ago – July 14, 1944
FRONT PAGE: Pvt. Thomas B. Gordon, son of Mr. and Mrs. Nathan Gordon, brother of Ercel and Julian Gordon, and grandson of Mr. Bud Pearson, was confirmed as killed in action recently. He had been reported missing in action from the Fifth Army January 26, 1944 in Italy. Buford was studying for the Ministry and was a leader of church activities in his community, especially with the young people. - Sgt. Floyd D. Carr, son of Mr. and Mrs. George F. Carr, has been listed as missing in action over France since June 27th. Mr. and Mrs. Carr have received a letter from him dated June 26th. In March, he graduated as gunner on the B-29 and landed in England in April. - Hilton Alewine, son of Mr. and Mrs. Moody Alewine of Stallo, was listed as missing in action in France June 6th. He was in the 82nd Air Borne Division, which spearheaded both the Sicily and Italy invasions.
DEATHS: Funeral services were held for Mr. Willie Byron Jernigan, 48, at Murphy Creek Church July 1, with burial in the church cemetery. A World War I veteran, he was in ill health for quite some time and was in several hospitals before entering the Veterans Hospital in Tuscaloosa, where he died June 28th. He was born in Pontotoc September 18, 1895 and moved to Winston County, where he married to Miss Ollie Mae Strait, who with two children survive him.
WEDDINGS: On June 29th in Tyronza, Arkansas, Miss Margie Piercy, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. E. E. Piercy of Covington, Tenn. became the bride of Sgt, Charles S. King, Jr. of this city.
