100 Years Ago – June 27, 1919
Remember the 4th of July! Remember the Fourth of July celebration. Don’t fail to wear a Memorial Button “ I have not forgotten the boys.”
LOUISVILLE: Mrs. Kittie Gill of Ala. is making an extended visit to relatives here. - Miss Gladys Gully is attending the summer Normal at A. & M. College. - Dr. M. L. Montgomery made a business trip to the Capital city this week. - Miss Mary Kate Gully left Wednesday for A. & M. College to attend the summer Normal. - Mrs. Sellie Woodward of Plant City, Fla. is the guest of relatives in and around Louisville. - Little Miss Virginia Bogges of Macon is the guest of her little cousins Elenor and Jan Woodward. - Dr. Fred Haynes of Laurel was the guest of his sister, Mrs. Dr. Parkes and family Sunday. - Mis Maud Lee, who has been in school in Va., arrived home Monday. - The campaign to raise funds for the building of the Memorial begins on July 26th and lasts until Aug. 5th.
Jim King, who returned from the hospital recently, is not doing well, but is a very sick man. - Mrs. J. H. Howard was called to Winona last week on account of illness of her sister-in-law, who we hope is much improved. - Mrs. Alma Wood is able to be up from a two-weeks illness.
DEATHS: Mrs. T. H. Stevens died at her home in Noxapater early Thursday, after a brief illness. She was a daughter of Dr. and Mrs. T. F. Kilpatrick and was a most elegant lady. She leaves a devoted husband and little son. - The home of Mr. Foster Webb was made sad Saturday when the death angel came and claimed his wife. Mrs. Webb was in the prime of life, but had been ill for some months. The funeral was held Sunday at the Baptist church in Noxapater. She is survived by her husband and four children, father and mother, four brothers and one sister.
MARRIAGES: Mr. Wheeler Cagle and Miss Mildred Ellis were married at the home of the bride Thursday, Rev. J. E. Wills saying the ceremony. The groom is a son of Mr. and Mrs. J. P. Cagle and holds a good position with the G. M. & N. Railroad.
NOXAPATER: Dr. R. M. Webb and family of Stallo attended the funeral of Mrs. Foster Webb here Sunday. Mr. and Mrs. Will Chambliss of Louisville also attended. - A good large crowd and pleasant of dinner Tuesday at the Masonic picnic. The orator was Hon. M. R. Grant of Meridian. - Mr. and Mrs. McElroy and children of Highpoint were guests of their daughter, Mrs. A. T. Callahan this week.
75 Years Ago – July 7, 1944
Little Donnie Joe, son of Mr. and Mrs. W. H. Hisaw, RFD 6, paid us a visit last Friday. Donnie Joe was born five weeks ago last Tuesday, weighing 10 and a quarter pounds, with a full-grown front baby tooth. He is growing and has not been sick a single day.
NOXAPATER: Peggy Ming is visiting her aunt and grandmother, Mrs. Earnest Crowell and Mrs. Viola Ming in the Bond community this week. - The community canning plant is now ready and will open July 6th. - Dollie Jane Barnes, little daughter of Mr. and Mrs. T. J. Barnes, is recuperating at home following a tonsillar operation at Harrison Hospital Friday.
DEATHS: Funeral services for Carl. F. Jackson, 66, were held at Macon, Good Hope Baptist Church, June 28th, with burial in the church cemetery. Mr. Jackson was born and reared in the Fearn Springs community and his death came after a long illness. He is survived by his wife, two daughters, one son, three brothers and three sisters. - Mrs. Sallie Fleetwood Russell passed away June 18 at her home in Fearn Springs. Funeral services were held the following day in Mashulaville Baptist Church with burial in the church cemetery, next to her husband, James M. Russell. She was born in 1854 and would have reached her 90th birthday if she had lived until August. She was a daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Asbury Fleetwood and lived most of her life in the same vicinity. She made her home with her daughter, Mrs. Mary Sue Brown and had been in declining health the past year.
LOUISVILLE: Misses Dane Patterson and Mary Joe Lindsey, who have been employed in Jackson, spent the 4th of July here with their respective parents. - Mrs. C. L. Marquette returned to her home in Ashland, Wisconsin Tuesday after a visit with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. R. L. Mitchell, Sr. Mr. and Mrs. Fred Mitchell traveled with her to the train in Durant.
WEDDINGS: Miss Geraldine Kemp, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. W. T. Kemp of Noxapater, and Mr. Ralph Lee Carter, U. S. Navy, son of Mrs. Charles Carter of Estes, were joined in marriage June 29th at the home of the pastor, Rev. Hill in Philadelphia.
