100 Years Ago – June 13, 1919
Congress declared for Woman Suffrage the other day, but thank goodness the States must ratify it before it becomes a law of the land. We do not oppose the law for the reason that we do not think the ladies are competent to vote with average voter. Nay, nay. It is because she is more competent and we want to keep her pure. We shall never vote to bring her down so low as the average voter.
LOUISVILLE: Thirty miles of rock road reaching from the east to the State Highway on the west would put Louisville on the map more than anything that could be. - Shelby Woodward returned home Tuesday after a several days visit to friends at Forest and Jackson. - Miss Virginia Robinson left this week for Nashville, Tenn., where she will attend the summer normal. - Mrs. J. M. Harris and son Garland left Tuesday for California on an extended visit to relatives. - Mr. and Mrs. S. A. Redding and two interesting children left Tuesday for Colorado on an extended visit.
MARRIAGES: On June 8th at the home of J. D. Hill, Mr. A.J. Ponder and Miss Emma Hemphill in the presence of friends and relatives, were married. - Mr. M. Hollis and Miss Levada Walker became man and wife on June 8th. - On June 5th, Mr. E. R. Triplett of Winston County and Miss Mattie McKnight of Vicksburg were married at the home on Hon. Lee Godwin, president of the Bank of Blue Mountain. Mrs. Godwin is the sister of the bride.
NOXAPATER: The Chautauqua which is scheduled for this place on the 19-20-21 promises some good entertainments. - Mrs. Talmage Salter and baby of Ackerman were guests of friends at Hight the past week. - Miss Annie Gunn returned home Wednesday from there visit to Florence, accompanied by here sister, Mrs. J. R. Taylor and baby. - Mrs. Lee Crawford and baby of Tunica are guests of her parents, Mr. and Mrs. W. A. Gunn. - Mrs. Mary Waterloo of Highpoint was a guest of her sister Mrs. S. J. Hopkins, latter part of the past week. - Mr. and Mrs. J. N. Young received a message Tuesday from their son Roscoe informing them that he had landed in the U. S., having been in France for several months.
75 Years Ago – June 23, 1944
FRONT PAGE: Mrs. M. P. Mills has been notified by the War Department that her brother, Pfc. Jack Hargett of Saltillo was killed in action on May 16th in Italy. - Lester Hammill has the honor of bringing in the first cotton bloom this year on Tuesday. On Wednesday one of our black farmers, Charlie McCully, brought in the second cotton bloom, from his farm on Highway 15 north of town. A fire broke out in the Jitney Jungle store early Sunday morning.
DEATHS: Funeral services for Mrs. Jane McCool, 89, widow of the late Mr. T. McCool, were held at Murphy Creek Baptist Church June 20th, with burial in the church cemetery. She passed away on the 19th after an illness of about two months, at the home of her daughter, Mrs. J. W. Ashmore. She was born in Alabama in 1855, married Mr. McCool, and 1875 and they were blessed with nine children, with six of them left to mourn her passing, as well a number of grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
LOUISVILLE: Mr. and Mrs. Binks Harris of Bessemer, Ala. are guests of their parents, Mr. and Mrs. Hugh Harris. - Phil Walker returned home last week from a two-week visit with his grandmother in Livingston, Ala. - Miss Mary Elizabeth Johnson and Miss Irene Whisenant of Memphis spent last week end here and in Noxapater visiting their parents. - Miss Imogene Earhart of Prairie spent the week end visiting her parents, Mr. and Mrs. H. C. Earhart. – Miss Langley returned home Thursday for a vacation from Millsaps College.
WEDDINGS: Of interest in the Gum Branch community is the news that Miss Ruby Collier, daughter of Mr. J. B. Collier, and Mr. Joseph Smith of Crawford were married June 17th at the home of Rev. W. L. Day. - On June 17th at the First Baptist Church, Miss Charlotte Ezell and Lt. Cary W. Salter were married. The bride is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. J. Brooks Ezell and the groom is the son of Dr. and Mrs. C. W. Salter. Sr. of Macon.
NOXAPATER: Mr. and Mrs. Doyle Martin of Jackson were week end visitors of their parents, Mr. and Mrs. Jim Martin and other relatives. – Miss Elizabeth Webb had returned from a visit with her sister-in-law Mrs. Hamlett Webb at Jefferson City, Mo. – Miss Victoria Taylor is spending a week in Starkville visiting her uncle and aunt, Mr. and Mrs. R. S. Glenn.
BIRTHS: F/O and Mrs. Blake Harris announce the birth of a daughter, Janice Ann, who arrived June 18th.
