100 Years Ago – May 30, 1919
FRONT PAGE: The latest news we could get before going to press was that Germany refuses to accept the terms of the allies in toto, but are inclined to substitute much of their own dictation for that which they do not like in the allies’ terms. The allies stand ready to enforce their demands, and no doubt will proceed at once to make the Germans “dance” to the music. - All parties interested in old Upper-Sixteenth, or Mt. Zion, Cemetery, that same will be cleaned off on the first Saturday in June and all are invited to assist. W. T. Cockrell, Comm.
LOUISVILLE: There will be a baseball game this afternoon on the local diamond between Philadelphia and Louisville. - Among the oversea boys to return home this week were: Eph and Author Prisock, Geo. Hall, and Dillard Vowell. - The Stork dropped a fine young man at the home of Mr. and Mrs. H. E. McCully at an early hour Wednesday.
DEATHS: Mr. J. B. Holmes received a paper last week announcing the death of Mr. Mark Peavy, 72, who died May 11th at this home in Massachusetts. He was for a number of years a citizen of our town where he succeeded well in the mercantile business, going from here back to his old county of Maine. He was a clever Jew and has many friends throughout the county. - The funeral of little Fred Wilks, 6-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. Charlie Wilks was held Sunday, Rev. J. E. Wills of Louisville officiating.
NOXAPATER: Mr. Jack Coleman of Weir was a guest in the home of his brother, Mr. Wren Coleman this week. - Miss Annie Gunn is on a visit to her sister, Mrs. Taylor at Florence. - The Club ladies request that everybody cooperate with them in a Clean-Up Day for the town, June 4. - Friends of Mr. and Mrs. F. L. Croft regret that they leave this week for their new home at Newton - Mrs. C. C. McLeod and Mrs. Jennie Lewis were called Wednesday to the bedside of the latter’s sister, Mrs. Shield, who is critically ill at her home in Meridian.

FRONT PAGE: Allies Invade France On Hundred Mile Front; Fight Way Inward; 4000 Ships Carry Forces Across Channel; Umbrellas of Planes Guard Landings [D-Day] - W. A. Strong, Sr. of Louisville, special representative of the G. M. & O. Railroad, Saturday was re-elected Commander of the Mississippi Chapter of Sons of Confederate Veterans at Jackson.
DEATHS: Funeral services for Sgt. Charles Criss, 22, were held Monday at First Baptist Church, Rev. W. L. Day officiating. Interment followed in the Masonic Cemetery. Sgt. Criss was killed in a plane crash near Santa Ana, Calif. May 26th, where he was stationed with the Marine Air Forces. He is survived by his wife, the former Miss Frances Johnson, his mother, Mrs. Blanche Criss, and three brothers. Three former squadron members from Memphis also attended. - Funeral services and burial were held Thursday for the infant son of Torpedoman and Mrs. Charles Odie Trenor, Jr. The seven-and-a-half-pound baby was born in a Jackson hospital June 7th, but only breathed a few times. - Mr. Howard Acie Clearman, 61, passed away in the Louisville hospital early Sunday following a lingering illness. He had been in the hospital more than seven weeks and had two operations. Services and burial were at Bevil Hill Church. He is survived by his widow, the former Miss Maude Parks, two sisters and three brothers.
LOUISVILLE: Miss Martha Nabers will leave today for Washington, D. C. to visit Mr. and Mrs. George Dorroh. - Mrs. Carrie Davis is not improving and was carried to Rush Infirmary, Meridian. - Richard and George McGraw left this week for California where George will attend U. C. L. A. - Mrs. Carrie Hollingsworth spent last weekend at Forest with her mother-in-law Mrs. E. O. Hollingsworth.
WEDDINGS: Mr. and Mrs. W. B. Dempsey of Ford community announce the May 13th marriage of their daughter Fannie Mae to Johnnie B. Hollis, son of Mr. Jack Hollis and the late Mrs. Hollis.
NOXAPATER: Forrest Woods was called to New Orleans by the death of his brother, Charlie Miller. - The Air Medal, posthumously awarded to 2nd Lt. Olyn H. Hill of Louisville, was presented to the late hero’s mother, Mrs. Vella A. Hill by Col. Harry Peterson, Key Field Commanding Officer.
BIRTHS: Mr. and Mrs. Glen McBrayer are receiving congratulations on the birth of a little son June 2nd at Louisville Hospital. - Mr. and Mrs. Alvin B. Allen announce the birth of a daughter, Della Ann Allen, June 1st at Baptist Hospital. Mrs. Allen is the former Miss Hilda Mae Bane, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. W. J. Bane of Louisville.
