100 Years Ago – May 9, 1919
On May 4th, the sisters and brother of John G. Lampley met at his home in Noxapater for a family reunion. Present were Mr. and Mrs. Albert Lampley of Kellis’ Store, Miss Willie Lampley and Mrs. Salley Gordon of Louisville and Mrs. J. H. Davis of Laurel. This was the first meeting of the entire family in 12 years.
Mr. Summers, owner of the Newton Bottling Works, has purchased the Louisville Bottling works, and Mr. W. B. Hunter of Newton is manager.
LOUISVILLE: Born, to Mr. and Mrs. Jeff Ellis of Laurel, a fine boy on the 2nd. - Miss Ellen Bradley of Ackerman was here for a few days as the guest of Mr. and Mrs. Hunt Anders. - Mrs. A. E. Miller was called to Philadelphia Saturday by the illness of her mother, Mrs. Welch. - Mr. and Mrs. Fred Nabers and baby of Russellville, Ala., are the guests of Mr. and Mrs. Edgar Bennett and other relatives. - Miss Mary Davis was called home from Greenville Wednesday to the bedside of her mother, who is very ill.
DEATHS: The remains of Miss Judson Webster were brought back from Hattiesburg last Sunday and interred in the Masonic cemetery, after services were conducted at the Baptist Church. She passed away at the home of her sister, Mrs. H. N. Tabor, on Saturday, May 3rd. She was the oldest child of the late Mr. and Mrs. John M. Webster and was nearing three score and ten years. She had been an invalid for several months. She was a splendid woman, having lived her long life for others.
NOXAPATER: The Agricultural High School terminated its session last Wednesday, and on Thursday evening, May 1st the first program of the Commencement exercises was given. Friday afternoon the pupils of Mrs. Harris and Miss Creekmore gave a May Day program. Friday evening a splendid Senior play was performed. Saturday evening class exercise and annual address by Dr. W. Cooper of Brookhaven who also delivered the Diplomas. - Mrs. S. F. Riley of Jackson spent the week end here with relatives, and left Monday for Hattiesburg, accompanied by her mother, Mrs. C. C. Gunn, who will visit her daughter, Mrs. Caperton, and also her son, Dr. J. S. Gunn at Pachuta. - Mr. and Mrs. Walter Bennett of Mt. Pleasant vicinity were guests of the latter’s parents, Mr. and Mrs. Wilkes Carter.
75 Years Ago – May 12, 1944
FRONT PAGE: Mrs. Annie Dunn of Noxapater received following telegraph. “Report just received from Red Cross states your son Tech. Sgt. Joe W. Dunn is a prisoner of the Rumanian government. Letter of information will follow.” - One of the worst farm fires Winston County has ever suffered occurred Wednesday of last week at the farm of T. A. Haynes. RFD 2. Fortunately, no livestock was lost. The barn was insured for $600, which did not cover the 1200 bushels of corn, pickup truck and about 5 tons of hay, farm tools, harness, planting seed, and fertilizer lost. Mr. Haynes wanted to thank the firemen who arrived in time to save about 100 bushels of corn.
DEATHS: Funeral services were held for Jessie D. Row, 30, at Murphy Creek church May 7th. He died May 5th from injuries from a fall from mast of a ship in the Mobile Ship Yards, where he had been working for a year. He was the son of Mr. and Mrs. R. L. Rowe of Rock Port, Ky. He married Miss Mary Dean McCool Nov. 1, 1936. He is survived by his wife, three children, one brother and one sister. - Mr. Cliff Bouchillon, 65, passed away from a heart attack during his afternoon nap at his home in Noxapater, recovering from an illness of a few weeks. Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Lula Stokes Bouchillon, three daughters and two sons. - Funeral services were held Tuesday at the Noxapater Baptist Church for Mrs. Bessie Fraser, widow of Robert B. Fraser. She had been in failing health for several years. Surviving are his son, F. W. Fraser of Gulfport, and three grandchildren.
LOUISVILLE: Miss Edith Taylor of Vicksburg spent the week end with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. W. A. Taylor. - Mrs. Garner Land of Rocky Hill spent several days of each week with her mother, Mrs. S. O. Green during her recent illness.
WEDDINGS: Sgt. Barron Marshall, son of Mr. and Mrs. H. D. Marshall of Louisville, and Miss Mary Ann Pribyl, daughter of Mrs. John Pribyl, were married by the county Judge, May 2nd, in Wilber, Nebraska, home of the bride.
NOXAPATER: A delicious dinner at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Beck was given April 30th in honor of their son who leaves for the Navy May 12th. - Mrs. Rebecca F. Giddings of Gulfport was called here for the funeral of her grandmother, Mrs. Bessie Fraser.
BIRTHS: Pvt. and Mrs. Ben Smyth are the proud parents of a nine-pound son born May 4th. - Mr. and Mrs. James Wade announce the birth of a son born May 11th. - Mr. and Mrs. Lawrence Shurden are the parents of a baby son born May 8th. - Mr. and Mrs. Holman McAdory announce the birth of a nine-pound boy born May 5th.
