100 Years Ago – April 11, 1919
LOUISVILLE: Mr. Bob Langley was carried to the sanitarium in Newton this week for medical treatment. - Mrs. May of Sulphur, Va. was called here this week by the illness of her daughter, Mrs. Olyn Brassfield, who is much better at this writing. - Mr. and Mrs. Norman Osborn are the happy possessors of a fine ten-pound boy at their home west of town. - Mr. and Mrs. Coyt Hanna were called to Highpoint Monday to the bedside of their grandfather, Dr. Terrill, who had the misfortune of being seriously hurt and is not much better, we regret to report. - Wilbur Thomas and Gordon Bennett are both back home, having received their final discharges. - Born, to Mr. and Mrs. Tom Rodgers, a fine girl on the 10th.
Two interesting letters were published in this edition. The first, from Winston County boy Fletcher B. Shephard, who was at the surrender of the German Fleet, and the second from Pvt. Hiley A. Speights to Mr. Everett Allen, who served with Everett’s brother Ernest Allen, Co. K., 116 Inft. 29th division. They were in the same camps together from Camp Pike, Camp Gordon, Ga., and Camp McClellen, Ala. and went to France together. He was there when Ernest fell into the shell hole saying “I am hurt.” Speights rolled him over to see he was shot in the heart, and stated Ernest died without pain, not saying another word. He was buried where he fell, wrapped in his blanket.
NOXAPATER: Mr. and Mrs. J. C. Hickman are receiving congratulations on the birth of a fine girl at their home on the 6th. - Mrs. Rodger Kilpatrick is rapidly convalescing at the Turner Hospital, Meridian, where she underwent an operation last week. - Last Monday Mrs. C. C. McLeod and Mrs. Jennie Lewis of Rocky Hill were called to the bedside of the latter’s sister, Mrs. Shedd, who is critically ill at her home in Meridian.
HICKORY RIDGE: Miss Mary Wade, our teacher for the past session, was married a few days ago. - Mr. J. Z. Slawson received a letter from his son Tommie, saying that he had arrived safely back from “over there.”
75 Years Ago – April 14, 1944
FRONT PAGE: Following a downpour of rain Saturday night, what may be termed a young storm hit the southwest part of the county at 1 a.m. Sunday morning. The high wind hit D. Taylor’s home, taking away the front porch and garage. The roof and kitchen of Earnest Taylor’s 5-room house was blown away, taking away his supply of meat, lard, and other groceries. Our black friend Frank Culberson lost his entire house and furniture. A large amount of timber was damaged at both the Taylor’s, C. G. Blue, and Culberson’s farms. Fortunately, no one was injured.
BIRTHS: Sgt. and Mrs. T. B. Miller announce the birth of a son, Thomas David, April 9th. - Mr. and Mrs. J. L. Young, Jr. of Noxapater are the parents of a son, Charles Len, born April 9th. - Mr. and Mrs. W. M. Black of Reform are the proud parents of twins, a daughter named Eva Joe and a son named Bobbie Melton, born April 7th.
Mr. and Mrs. M. C. Doolittle received a telegram from the War Department that their son, James, was a prisoner of war somewhere in Germany. Sgt. Doolittle was a gunner on a Flying Fortress and had been reported as missing as of Feb. 22nd.
DEATHS: Mrs. J. R. Garrard, 86, died at her home April 2, after a three-week critical illness. She as born in Kemper County but had lived in Noxapater for the past 30 years. Funeral services were held Monday at the Noxapater Baptist Church, with interment in Mt. Carmel cemetery. She is survived by four daughters. - Funeral service was held Sunday for Mrs. J. W. Milam (nee Miss Lula Yarbrough) at Noxapater Baptist Church, with interment in the church cemetery.
LOUISVILLE: Mrs. H. E. Parkes, currently in the Louisville hospital, is improving. - Pvt. Harold Algood is here from Camp Gordon, Ga. to visit his mother, Mrs. L. M. Algood. - Miss Marjorie Moore of Prairie spent last week end here visiting her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Dempsey Moore. - William Kirkpatrick came home from Winfield, La. to spend Easter here with his wife and son.
WEDDINGS: The marriage of Miss Oteria Penn Triplett, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. F. M. Triplett of Louisville, and Sgt. James Edward Freeman of Laurel was solemnized Saturday night, April 1, at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Ed Dunlap, Montgomery, Ala. - The Evergreen community was surprised by the marriage of Miss Lavell Parks and Mr. Roger McCully this past Friday evening.
NOXAPATER: Mr. and Mrs. Maybre McAdory announce the birth of a ten-and-a-half-pound son, April 8th. - Sympathy is extended to Mr. and Mrs. Earl Hillard in the death of their infant babe, born April 5th at the Pearson Clinic. Interment was in the Mt. Carmel cemetery Thursday of the past week. - Miss Juanita Gunn of E. C. J. C. was at home for Easter.
