100 Years Ago – December 5, 1919
LOUISVILLE: Mr. Cleve Wood spent a few days in Eupora the first of the week on business. - Chancellor Brantley is holding court at DeKalb this week. - Giles Patty spent Thanksgiving with his mother. - Our town welcomes the return of Mr. and Mrs. N. M. Bradford. They will resume their mercantile business. - Miss Eva Clark is at home again after spending several months with her sister, Mrs. Townsend in Shreveport, La. - Rev. and Mrs. Simpson and children of Lama, Miss., are visiting their relatives two miles east of town. Mr. Simpson was sent to Bay Springs by Methodist Conference for next year. - Mrs. A. B. McGraw of Meridian is the pleasant guest of Mr. and Mrs. J. M. Robinson and other relatives. - County Treasurer, J. D. Strait, left this week for Hinze where he will make his future home. - Richard Davis, who has a good position in the city of Tupelo, spent Thanksgiving with homefolks. - Mr. O. S. Woodruff of Paris, Texas, visited his sister, Mrs. Lela Hudson, last week. - Louis Glazer is very much pleased with the way his friends are rallying to the new firm. - Mr. and Mrs. Gaither of Laurel are visiting their friends here this week.
75 Years Ago – December 29, 1944
FRONT PAGE: Technician Fourth Grade Sgt. Oakley R. Ivy was killed in action in Germany December 12th. He is the 25-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. John C. Ivy. He entered into the Service January 1942 and left for overseas in February 1944. - Mr. and Mrs. J. L. Crowson of Louisville, Route 6, have three sons and a son-in-law in the U. S. Army. Pvt. Joseph W. Crowson was inducted this year, Pvt. Noel B. Crowson entered service in March 1944, Pvt. Crandler B. Crowson, now in Germany, entered the service in 1942 and sailed overseas in Sept. 1944, and son-in-law Cpl. James D. Cole has recently landed safely in the Pacific, having been inducted in Jan. 1943.
DEATHS: Mrs. Margaret Smith, 84, of the Ellison Ridge community passed away Dec. 23 at the family residence, after an illness of 30 days. She is survived by one son and one daughter, as well as several nieces and nephews. Services were held at Murphy Creek Baptist Church with burial in the church cemetery. - Mr. R. W. Hamill died at his home in Sturgis Dec. 18 after an extended illness. Mr. Hamill was a Winston county native and had lived in Sturgis most of his life. A member of the Methodist church and Masonic Lodge, services were held at the Methodist Church Wednesday. He is survived by his widow, three daughters and seven sons.
LOUISVILLE: Mr. D. K. Mitchell, 75, of Valiant, Oklahoma, is visiting relatives here in Winston county, the first visit here in seven years. Mr. Mitchell was born and reared here until 1902, when he moved west. - Miss Doris Sanders of Mobile spent the holidays with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. W. J. Sanders. - Miss Elizabeth Wood of Memphis was at home with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. C. W. Wood, for the holidays. - Miss Dwight Kerr of Clarksdale and Miss Katherine Kerr of Prairie visited their parents, Mr. and Mrs. M. L. Kerr for the holidays. Miss Marguerite Kerr arrived Wednesday from Camp Shelby. - Mr. and Mrs. William Kirkpatrick and son, William Ellis, of Winnfield, La. visited relatives here for the holidays.
WEDDINGS: At mid-day, December 23rd, Mrs. Blanche Elizabeth Matthews, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. H. C. Manning of Mobile, became the bride of Kenneth G. Wood, son of Mrs. Alma Wood of Louisville, Miss. at the Baptist parsonage in Mobile, Rev. Dr. L. C. Freeny officiating.
NOXAPATER: Friends of Mrs. C. A. Jones are glad to hear she is recovering from her illness of the past two or three weeks. - Mr. Haskel Webb of Forest and Misses Sarah Wallene of Decatur College and Elizabeth Webb of Sturgis are at home with their parents, Mr. and Mrs. J. F. Webb for the holidays. - Mrs. Mary Sue Taylor of Birmingham, Ala. spent the holidays here with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. J. H. Webb. Mr. and Mrs. Rupert S. Glenn joined in the holidays at the Webb home. - Mrs. Nannie Beth Steadman of Hattiesburg spent the holidays here with her father, Mr. H. B. Caperton. - Mr. and Mrs. H. S. Porter and children of Ackerman and Mr. and Mrs. Grady McBrayer and children and Marine Master Technical Sgt. Claude Estes of Pascagoula were guests of Mrs. B. F. McBrayer during the holidays.
BIRTHS: S/Sgt. and Mrs. Joe D. McCullouch announce the birth of a daughter, Jo Ann Carolyn, born November 30 at King’s Hospital at Bay St. Louis. The proud father is the son of Mr. and Mrs. C. B. McCullouch of Louisville.
