NEWS FROM YEARS PAST

NEW SIDE WALKS: Our clever and progressive town marshal and street commissioner Mr. N. C. Eudy, under the direction of the board of mayor and aldermen, has done some beneficial work for the town for the past few weeks in the construction of new side-walks and street work. A large number of the old plank walks, some of which were so dilapidated as to make them dangerous for use, have been torn away and new ones have taken their place. This week has been occupied in the placing of new walks in the gaps between the brick pavements of the business part of town and as soon as this is finished, the work in the resident section will be pushed forward as rapidly as possible until finished.
Mrs. Frances Norwood, about 73, of this community, died at the home of her son, Mr. C. Norwood, a mile out of town last Sunday. Her demise was largely due to the decline of life. The interment was Monday in Mt. Zion cemetery, four miles west of this place, and the funeral was attended by a large assembly of relatives and friends. Mrs. Norwood had been married three times during her life and was the mother of Mrs. Lawrence Latham and Rev. A. F. Williams of this place.
A horrible run-away accident occurred out in the Spring Creek neighborhood in which a good man lost his life. Mr. Eb. Lucious, an old gentleman of the Hohenlinden community, had started to Eupora with a load of cotton yesterday morning. When within about 10 miles of this city his wagon broke down, and he unharnessed his mules and going to a neighbor’s not far distant, and borrowed a wagon with which to resume his journey. Later in the day he was found on the roadside, dead, his body terribly torn and mangled. The wagon was completely demolished and the mules gone. It is supposed that his team became frightened and ran away, with the above tragical results. Mr. Lucious was about 65 or 70 years of age and was one of the best men of his section. His death is deeply deplored.
On last Sunday at three o’clock a happy marriage occurred at the home of Mrs. Georgia Kelly, out in the Walthall community, the contracting parties being Mr. Wm. Middleton and Miss Maude Dearman, Justice O. C. Fondren of Sapa officiating. The bride is the eldest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. A. J. Dearman of near Eupora, and is a worthy young lady. Mr. Middleton is a son of Rev. T. H. Middleton, well-known throughout the county and is a young man of industrial and energetic habits.
Another matrimonial union consummated this week was that of Mr. Lewis Latham and Miss Dora Jester, both of the Sapa neighborhood, which took place on Wednesday. The wedding was a quiet one and was celebrated at the home of the bride’s parents, Mr. and Mrs. R. P. Jester, with only a few friends present. Mr. Latham is an enterprising and progressive young planter of that section.
