WALTHALL: Misses Willie and Katie Finch of Spring Creek passed through here Tuesday enroute to the I. I. & C. at Columbus. - Mr. Jim Hitt and wife of Eupora were guests of Mr. Jim Moore’s family Sunday. - Miss Myrtle James of Alva spent Monday night with Miss Homie Holland enroute to the Industrial Institute and College at Columbus. - Misses Delle DeLashment and Lou Lovett made a business trip to Eupora Tuesday.
NEWS OF TOWN AND COUNTY: Miss Claudia Bridges, who has spent the past few weeks with relatives and friends in this county, returned Saturday to Memphis. - Mr. W. A. Bridges of Fort Worth, Texas, who has been on a visit to relatives at his former home, Walthall, returned to Texas last Monday. Mr. Bridges is a prosperous young railroad man and has a good paying run out of Fort Worth. - Mr. and Mrs. J. T. Lamb of near here have the sympathies of their friends in the death of their infant daughter, which occurred Saturday night. The interment took place at Bluff Springs cemetery Sunday afternoon. - Among the young ladies who left this week for the Industrial Institute and College at Columbus were: Misses Wilma Finch, Alma Brown, Mary Harpole, of this city; Misses Ethel and Clara Lawrence of Benela; Misses Kate and Wilma Finch of Walthall, and Misses Jimmie Vance and Estra Magness of Slate Springs. The young ladies will be sadly missed from their large circles of home friends during their absence.
DEATHS: Mrs. Kate Cummings, wife of Mr. Thos. Cummings, died suddenly of heart failure at their home in Stewart last Sunday morning. Her death came as quite a severe shock to her family and friends, as it was entirely unexpected. She had suffered some two or three attacks recently but they were not considered very serious. The interment occurred at Ebernezer cemetery near Grady Monday. The deceased lady leaves a husband and three small children, the youngest of whom is a babe of only four months, and upon these the loss will fall most heavily. She was a native of the Grady community, being a sister of Messrs. Jas. and Thomas Pinson of that place, both well-known here.
PERSONAL MENTION: Dr. L. W. Finch of Walthall was in town Wednesday. - Prof. M. P. Hendrick, principal of the Maben Training School and editor of the Meteor, was a visitor to this office Saturday. - Dr. Carl Wiggins spent Sunday at Tomnolen. - Mrs. M. C. Irwin and her attractive daughter Miss Lillie, of Cleveland, Miss. are here on a several weeks visit to relatives. - Miss Olivia Garner, who has been spending some weeks with relatives in Winona and Kilmichael, is now on a visit to friends here.
An alarm of fire was turned in about one o’clock last Monday afternoon from the home of Mr. J. R. DuBerry, in the northern part of town. Numerous volunteers hurried to the scene and with the energetic employment of buckets and ladders soon had the flames extinguished. The fire originated in the roof of the kitchen and was caused by a defective flue. Little damage was done.
