NEWS FROM YEARS PAST
July 11, 1902
Mr. Thomas Taylor’s home near the school building was invaded by burglars on last Monday night. As is the custom during these warm nights, Mr. Taylor had been in the habit of leaving the doors and windows open on retiring. About 11: 30 Mr. and Mrs. Taylor were awakened, and peeking into the semi-darkness of the room, described the figure of a man standing in front of the bureau, apparently searching for something. In a moment the unwelcome visitor was joined by another of the same type and this individual took his stand within three feet of Mr. Taylor. With no firearm of any kind, Mr. Taylor and his wife quickly went over to Mr. Jas. Harpole across the street. Mr. Harpole returned with them, only to find the burglars had made their escape. Thankfully, no money or valuables were taken. Let this be a call for our citizens to prepare themselves against probable repetitions.
Mr. James Parks Thornton, an aged and respected resident of the Sapa community, died at his home one mile from that place last Saturday. His funeral occurred Sunday, Rev. V. J. Bell officiating, with burial in New Hope cemetery. Mr. Thornton was about 53 years of age and had been in declining health for some years. He is survived by his wife, and four daughters.
