FRONT PAGE: Mrs. Susan Stocks died last week at New Albany. She was the oldest citizen of that place, her father having settled there in 1838, when she was quite young. Her husband erected the first building in the town, a large hotel for the accommodation of stage coach passengers. She was the daughter of Argyle Taylor of Franklin County, Ala., who was a member of the Senate when the State was admitted to the Union.
TOWN AND COUNTY: Mr. Dick Eudy had the misfortune to lose a fine horse Saturday. A wagon load of oats had been left in the lot Friday night and the animal got out of the stable some time during the night and ate as long as he could swallow. - The machinery for cutting up chair timber, which has been operated here for about two years by J. A. McKillop, was moved this week to Cleveland, Tenn., by W. S. Milne, the owner. Milne’s chair factory is located at that place. - The trial of Messrs. Frank and Steve Latham, charged with assault upon Walter Norwood, took place Saturday at Walthall. The case against Mr. Steve Latham was dismissed and Mr. Frank Latham was fined $5. - The Odd Fellows Lodge of the black community at this place will celebrate the Fourth of July by a picnic.
PERSONAL MENTION: Dr. Carl Wiggins visited relatives at Tomnolen Sunday. - Mrs. L. P. Trotter of Tomnolen visited her daughter, Mrs. Mabel Smith, this week. - Miss Viola Tabb of Walthall is the guest of her aunt, Mrs. Leona Ingrahm this week. - Mrs. J. L. Taylor and little child of Clarkson are guests of Mr. Elkins’ family here this week. - Mr. Charles Statham has resigned his position in the hardware department of Buchanan & Co. He will probably locate in Scranton, where he has relatives. - Mrs. Peter Green of Kilmichael, accompanied by her little granddaughter Ruth Harrison, was the guest of her niece, Miss Lizzie Barnett this week.
WALTHALL: Walthall was blessed with a refreshing shower Tuesday night, which was badly needed. - H. V. Finch is reported on the sick list. - Miss Emma Lovett is visiting relatives in north Webster this week. - Marriage License has been issued to D. W. Bridges and Miss M. E. Blansett; L. J. Buford and Miss Dovie Sims; J. P. Woods and Miss Carrie Sheppard. - Miss Nolie Mann is visiting her sister, Mrs. Sanders, at Mantee this week. - Miss Ethel Sugg of McCain was visiting friends here Wednesday.
STATE ITEMS: Smallpox still exists in fifteen counties in the state. - There is considerable complaint of lice in cotton in some sections of the state. - Work has begun on the new railroad from Belzoni in Washington county to Yazoo City. - Prominent ladies of the state will make an effort to establish an “Old Ladies’ Home” and a temporary organization for this purpose has been effected.
