A match game of base ball will be played at four o’clock this afternoon by the Winona and Eupora teams in Eudy’s pasture. An admission fee of 25 cents will be charged to cover necessary expenses. An interesting game is assured.
MEAT MARKET REOPENED: I have opened up my beef market near the depot and am prepared to furnish my customers regularly with the choicest beef and pork at the old prices. I keep it nice and fresh and deliver it promptly. T. Crowell.
FORMER EUPORA CITIZEN ILLEGALLY CONFINED: News comes from Jackson that Elmer L. Harris, who was once employed on the PROGRESS here and who is well known by many of our citizens, had written to Attorney General McClurg to engage his services in a suit against the city of San Antonio for illegal arrest and imprisonment. He is visiting San Antonio with a sick brother for the benefit of the latter’s health and was suspected of being one of the robbers who raided a bank in Montana recently. He states that he was arrested and carried to the lockup and confined without being given a chance to identify himself. After remaining in a cell several hours, he was released after producing evidence that he was the wrong man. He has entered suit for $10,000 damage against the city.
NEWS FROM NEIGHBORING COUNTIES: Prof. R. M. Mecklin of Winona was accidently killed Thursday night of last week while hunting in Big Black swamp with some friends. - Arrangements have been made to run a steamboat on the Yalobusha river between Greenwood and Grenada. The operation of the boat will not be undertaken unless the owners receive sufficient encouragement. - The trustees of Ackerman high school have elected Prof. Wiley Sanders principle for the next term.
NEWS AND NOTES OF TOWN AND COUNTY: The young people enjoyed a few hours very pleasantly Monday night at Mr. T. N. Lee’s residence. - John McCarter was tried the first of the week before Esquire Wade in the Cumberland neighborhood for shooting Marion Nolen Sunday. He was found guilty of a misdemeanor and a fine of $50 was assessed against him. The case was appealed. - Several of our citizens enjoyed an outing yesterday at Sulphur Springs, three miles south of here. - Protracted meeting began last night at the Baptist church and will continue all next week. - A pump has been ordered by the town council for the artesian piping between the depot and the business houses. - Prof. W. B. Walker of Bellefontaine, and Prof B. H. Malone of Tennessee, have formed a partnership under which they will conduct the Bellefontaine school for the next term. Prof. Walker has just closed a successful session and with the able assistance of Prof. Malone, he will make his school better than ever.
