GOOD BLACKBERRIES: Sometimes in old patches the fruit is inferior, for instead of developing properly it will be small and dry. There’s a reason for this and a way to avoid it. It takes some work but good fruit pays. If the patch is old and not cultivated too much, grass and weeds get in, and probably the canes are too thick. The remedy is culture or mulching. The latter is the best and the cheapest. Pile in old hay or straw or strawy manure. Make it six inches deep all through the patch. It will not only smother out weeds, but will so enrich the soil and hold moisture as to secure the best results.
