100 Years Ago – January 24, 1919
LOUISVILLE: Tom Metts arrived home yesterday from Camp Jackson, S. C. looking in fine health. - Mr. and Mrs. Albert Schoolar of Memphis are guests of relatives here this week. - John Aiken recently heard from all three of his boys in France and all are in good health.
DEATHS: It is with regret that we chronicle the death of Mrs. Ell Coleman, who died at her home northeast of town last Saturday after a brief illness. - Mrs. Spurgeon Estes died at her home south of town last Sunday and was buried Monday. - Boyd Carr, son of Mr. and Mrs. A.M. Carr, died at the family home in Ackerman last week. - News reached here this week that Sam Young died at his home south of town last Sunday after a short illness from Flu. Sam was a large, strong, and healthy man only a few weeks ago. - On December 15th, 1918, little Hermon Hobby, four-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. R. F. Hobby passed away.
NOXAPATER: The many friends of Mr. and Mrs. Buster Roberts sympathize with them in the death of their little two-year-old son Charles, who died Sunday after a week’s illness with pneumonia. His remains were interred in the Baptist cemetery Monday afternoon. - Mr. T. F. Kilpatrick and family left Friday for Percy, where they go to make there home. Best wishes follow them to their new home.
75 Years Ago – January 21, 1944
DEATHS: Hugh Gage Hathorn, 59, a Winston County native, died January 15th at the Baptist Hospital in Memphis. He had been in failing health for the past three years, having contracted rheumatic fever, from which he never recovered. His condition became more serious in the last days of his life. Funeral services were held at the Methodist church in Calhoun City, with burial in the church cemetery. He was employed by the Fair company, when he went to work in Calhoun City for 25 years. The past 15 years he was working for himself in the mercantile business. He is survived by his wife, the former Annabelle McLeod, and two daughters, as well as two sisters and three brothers. - Funeral services for Mrs. Kate Kennedy Blackwood, 85, were held today at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Mary Steens, with burial in Bethsalem Cemetery. Mrs. Blackwood, widow of the late W. A. Blackwood, died Wednesday at the home of her son, R. K. Blackwood at Jackson, Tenn. She had been in failing health for some time and had been in bed for the past two months, dying from pneumonia. A native of Winston county, she had spent most of her life in Choctaw County, having spent most of the last ten years with her son in Tennessee. She is survived by three daughters and four sons.
LOUISVILLE: Mr. and Mrs. Alec White of Jackson are the proud parents of a baby boy born January 12th at Baptist hospital. - Mrs. Woodie Adams left Saturday to join her husband at Camp Blanding, Fla. after visiting here with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. J. W. Baker.
WEDDINGS: Miss Nell Stewart of Baton Rouge, La., and Sgt. Lowery Allen, son of Rev. and Mrs. W. I. Allen of Louisville, were married in the hospital chapel of Fort Sam Houston, San Antonio, Texas. - Miss Gwendolyn Coley, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Coley and George Wesley Hamill, son of Mr. and Mrs. Clyde E. Hamill of Kansas City, Missouri, were married December 31st in Philadelphia. - Mrs. Lallie Turner announces the marriage of her daughter Audrey Turner to James Frank Ingram, January 12th at Louisville Methodist Church. The bride is the daughter of the late F. B. Turner and Mrs. Lallie Turner. The groom is the son of Mr. and Mrs. J. F. Ingram of Noxapater.
NOXAPATER: Mr. and Mrs. H. L. Porter and children and Miss Odein McBrayer of Ackerman visited their parents, Mr. and Mrs. B. F. McBrayer, this past week end. - Mr. and Mrs. J. M. McCown left Friday for Gainesville, Florida to visit their son-in-law and daughter, Sgt. and Mrs. T. F. Stevens.
LOAKFOMA: Several of this community attended the funeral of Mr. Rufus Freshour at Bevil Hill January 4th. - Pvt. Plumer Kinnard is spending his 10-day furlough with home folks, Mr. and Mrs. Joe Kinard and family.
