FRONT PAGE: Mr. and Mrs. Bryant W. Yarbrough of Noxapater received notice from the Government that their son, James, USMC, was killed in action, no date or location provided. His body was buried on site temporarily.
DEATHS: James L. Woodward, 71, son of the late Dr. George Y. Woodward, died in hospital Sunday, Jan. 2, 1944, with interment on Monday. He had been in ill health for years, but took the flu and then pneumonia and was carried to the hospital where he died. He leaves a wife, Mrs. Addie McNair Woodward, three children, one sister and two brothers. - Funeral services for Rev. J. L. Ward, 66, were conducted at Louisville Baptist Church with burial in Masonic Cemetery. Rev. Ward suffered a stroke on Dec. 2nd and carried to the hospital in Starkville, where he died Dec. 30th. He was ordained as a pastor 35 years ago. He was a member of one of the oldest families in the county, the son of the late J. W. and Talitha Pierce Ward. In 1910 he married Laura Eaves, who survives him along with their 5 sons, as well as one sister and six grandchildren. - Funeral services were held at the Baptist church in Noxapater last Saturday for James Smith, 32, who lost his life December 29th in an accident when the Gulf Transport bus he was driving collided head-on with an oil truck near Lucedale. Burial was in the Mt. Carmel cemetery. He is survived by his wife, Willie Mae Parker Smith, one son, one daughter, his mother Mrs. H. A. Smith, two sisters and two brothers. - Mr. J. A. “Jule” Fleetwood, 83, lifelong resident of Winston County, died at the home of his son, Homer Fleetwood, in Akron, Ohio January 2nd. Funeral services and burial were conducted at Good Hope January 5th. He had been ill for the last three weeks of his life. He is survived by his son, one granddaughter, one brother at Fearn Springs and a number of nieces and nephews. - The Journal offers sympathy to Mr. and Mrs. I. B. Stacy on the passing of their little daughter, Pamala Jean, who died last Saturday at Pearson’s Clinic. Burial was in Masonic Cemetery Monday, Jan. 3rd. Mrs. Stacy is the former Miss Mae Brown, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. J. M. Brown. - Sidney B. Nowell, 45, of Plattsburg, passed away at a Philadelphia hospital Dec. 27th. He had been in poor health, but suffered an acute heart attack and died a few minutes after reaching the hospital. Services were held at Mars Hill with interment in the church cemetery. Mr. Nowell was born and reared in Neshoba County, having moved to Winston about 20 years ago. The son of Billie Nowell of McDonald, Miss, he is survived by his wife, three children, six brothers and three sisters. - Funeral services were held Sunday for Mrs. Lillie McNeel Parks. 38, at the Baptist church in Noxapater with burial in the church cemetery. A member of a prominent Winston family, she died at the family home Saturday, having contracted influenza and sick only a few days. She is survived by her husband and six children, two brothers and two sisters.
LOUISVILLE: Sgt. George N. Woodward is spending his furlough with his parents, Sheriff and Mrs. George Woodward. - Pvt. James Hyde of Columbus AFB is visiting relatives here while on furlough. - Mr. and Mrs. J. C. Craig announce the arrival for a fine baby girl, named Glenda Faye, born Nov. 15, 1943 at the Philadelphia hospital.
WEDDINGS: Miss Betty McElroy, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. M. L. McElroy, became the bride of Gerald D. Koors, USN, son of Mr. and Mrs. A. C, Koors of Duluth, Minn., January 2nd. The wedding was solemnized at the U. S. Presbyterian Church, Rev. James V. Cobb officiating. - Miss Rebecca Juanita Fraser, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. F. W. Fraser of Gulfport, and S/Sgt. Richard E. Giddings, formerly of Sudbury, Mass. and Pembroke, New Hampshire, were married Thursday in Biloxi at First Baptist Church.
NOXAPATER: Cpl. and Mrs. Paul Early returned home after visiting their parents, Mr. and Mrs. J. M. Kirkpatrick. - Mr. and Mrs. S. E. Myatt and family, Mrs. Jessie McBrayer, and Miss Ruth Gully visited in the home of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Gully and family in Calhoun community Sunday.
Three sons of Mr. and Mrs. Andrew Eaves are currently in the Navy. William Rubin Eaves went in the Navy in August 1942, Andrew C. went in February 1943, and Rodger Dee Eaves is currently in training at Bainbridge, MD.
