FRONT PAGE: The record in the Auditor’s November report states pensions were paid to only 28 Class A Confederate Soldiers/Veterans in the state of Mississippi. These were soldiers, exclusive of widows or servants. There may be two or three more veterans in the Soldiers’ Home. Only 30 Confederate Veterans remain out of nearly 70,000 enlisted in the Confederate Army in Mississippi in the Civil War. - Hattiesburg, Dec. 29: With services as simple as the life he led, Gov. Paul B. Johnson was buried here Wednesday morning, as hundreds of friends assembled to pay final tribute. The services included a recital of Governor’s own motto expressing a desire to “go to the silent tomb of the dreamless dead with a record of service to my fellowman.” There was no music in the 27-minute service at his country home, Tall Pines, nor for the two-minute interment.
DEATHS: Burial services were held Sunday, Dec. 25th, at the Masonic Cemetery for Mrs. Nell Cross Caldwell. A native of Winston County, she died Dec. 23rd at home in Houston, Texas, after an illness of several months. Funeral services were held in Houston and the body was brought home. She was the wife of Tom Caldwell, and also leaves a sister to mourn. - Funeral services were held Wednesday for Mrs. Alice Edwards Gully, 88, at Good Hope Church near Fearn Springs. She died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. R. E. Scarbrough, where she had lived the past 15 years. A member of one of the oldest and most respected families of this section, she was the daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Elisha Edwards of Kemper County. She moved to Winston county some 60 years ago and was the wife of the late Jesse S. Gully of Kemper County. Eight children were born and four are still living. - Among the deaths during the holidays was little 14-month-old Jo Ann Stewart, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Johnnie Stewart of Transylvania, La. The accident occurred on Highway 35 near Carthage, as the Stewart family was traveling from Louisiana to Highpoint for the holidays. Mr. Stewart was driving and hit a parked truck off the road with no lights on. The family got out of the car to avoid being hit, however, another car ran into the mother and daughter. Little Jo Anne died at a local hospital and the mother is in the hospital in Louisville. Burial was in Masonic Cemetery.
LOUISVILLE: Dozens of our men in uniform were home on furlough for the holidays. Some family members visited their family members where they were stationed. - Miss Margurite Kerr of Camp Shelby and Miss Dwight Kerr of Indianola visited their parents, Mr. and Mrs. M. L. Kerr, Sr. last week.
NOXAPATER: Miss Sadie King of Mobile, Ala. was home visiting her mother, Mrs. Ollie King and other relatives. - Miss Mary Lou Boswell of Philadelphia spent the holidays at home with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Jim Boswell. - Many of our soldier boys were home on furlough during the holidays.
BIRTHS: Mr. and Mrs. Wyatt Davis are the proud parents of a 9-pound baby boy born Dec. 23rd, and named Jimmie Calvin. - Lt. and Mrs. Haskel Carter are the happy parents of a fine son born Dec. 25th and named Dudley Keith. Lt. Carter is with the armed forces in England. - Born to Mr. and Mrs. Willie B. Hemphill on Dec. 27th, a fine girl.
