The fourth annual conference of the Mississippi Association of Adult Day Services was held at Lake Tiak O’Khata, Friday and Saturday, April 27-28. The conference was an opportunity for owner/operators of adult day service facilities to come together and share information, to become better caregivers. According to Benton Thompson, President of the association, there are 119 such facilities in the state, Co-Med Adult Day Care Center of Louisville being one.
When asked what adult day services are, Thompson said, “They are services for the elderly and disabled, those who are at home who are totally dependent upon their caregivers to provide needs for them.” He added that the services include transportation to and from the facility, hot meals, recreation, and some facilities have registered nurses and provide physical therapy, as well.
Thompson added that these types of services give the families and caregivers a break from the daily routine of caregivers. In some instances family members still have to work, and cannot leave the patient at home alone, so these facilities are a good alternative. Beyond that, the services allow the caregiver time to get away, and have a little time for themselves.
The adult day service facilities are funded primarily through Medicaid; however, some insurance companies will pay a portion of the fees, and the families can pay if they do not have Medicaid or insurance.
The conference included several break-out sessions to give the owner/operators and their workers up-to-date information dealing with their profession.
