Herb Frierson, commission of the Mississippi Department of Revenue, was speaker at the Feb. 25 meeting of the Eupora Rotary Club.
He shared with Rotarians the duties and responsibilities of the department along with discussing how the state collects multiple forms of taxes.
Although 97% of the taxpayers in Mississippi are compliant, Frierson said the state is losing money to fraudulent income tax filers.
“We want to make all taxpayers compliant,” he said.
The agency is operating with much fewer employees through attrition but is still meeting all targeted performance measures, Frierson said, adding that he would like to have more compliance officers.
“We’ve got some great employees that have made internal changes easier,” he said.
MDOR is the primary agency for collecting tax revenues that support state and local governments in Mississippi. The department is responsible for titling and registration of motor vehicles, monitoring ad valorem assessments throughout the state to ensure consistent appraisal and valuation of properties among the municipalities and counties of the state, enforcement of Mississippi’s Prohibition and Local Option Law, and operating as the wholesale distributor of alcoholic beverages.
