As work continues on the new municipal building complex in Mathiston, the town has announced that a final deadline has been set on purchasing a paver to be placed in this area.
The deadline for all paver forms is June 15. The 1-foot-square pavers will be placed on a sidewalk that has just recently been completed and link the Mathiston Veterans Memorial Monument with the bell tower that will be built this summer.
The bell tower will be in memory of Highway Patrolman Dan Smith, a Mathiston native killed in the line of duty and in honor of the first responders, firefighters, policemen and emergency personnel who risk their lives to provide public safety.
The pavers may be purchased in memory or in honor of a military veteran or for a loved one. The cost is $100 and paver forms may be picked up at Mathiston City Hall.
The bell tower will house the original town bell, cast in 1907, and provide a permanent home for this bell that was once in the original Mathiston High School.
The bell was donated to Bennett Academy, later known as Wood Junior College, and was returned to the town when the college closed in 2003.
