Are you interested in rocks and fossils? Do you know what secrets they hold? Come to Mathiston Public Library to see some of Earth’s beautiful creations.
The library is having a display of semiprecious and “ordinary” rocks and a few fossils from the collections of Sandra Grych and Susan Curry. They are former members of the Mississippi Gem and Mineral Society, and charter members of the North Mississippi Gem and Mineral Society.
As such, they discovered and collected beautiful and sparkly examples of those made available at gem and mineral shows in various states, and collected some also with their own efforts, some here in Mississippi. They also saw how some minerals were turned into magnificent jewelry.
The collection displayed includes agates, olivine (peridot), pietersite, malachite, chryscolla, sodalite, rose quartz, copper and labradorite. Others include geode halves with calcite or druzy quartz inside, as well as a slab of polished geode that shows the crystal structure and color. There are also ammonites and petrified wood, as well as a small locally found fossil (gravel driveway find).
For contrast, the display also has a few manmade products, such as fiber optic balls, goldstone and different crystals.
Mathiston Public Library invites the public to come in during regular hours (Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday from 1:30-5 p.m. and Thursday from 9 a.m.-12:30 p.m.) to see the display.
