Louisville youth Julius Culwell, nicknamed “Fast Nick”, knows all about going fast.
While he’s not old enough to be behind a steering wheel, he is blazing through the show arena on top of his 23 year old mare named How D My Valentine.
The duo recently was notified that they were national qualifiers in senior barrel racing level 2 and senior pole bending levels 2 and 3 for the 2019 Lucas Oil American Quarter Horse Association (AQHA) World Championship Show in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma in November.
The two will compete against riders double Julius’s age and horses that are a third of his mare’s age. Despite their ages, the two recently returned from the Hoosier Palomino Association (HPA) Fall Show & Futurity in New Castle, Indiana where they placed first in open and youth pole bending.
Julius even placed his 15 year old mare Hollywood NV ME first in open and youth barrel racing and flag races. He’s currently ranked first and second in the nation with his two mares in both pole bending and flag races in the 14-18 year old youth division and the open senior division in the Palomino Horse Breeders of America (PHBA). Julius attributes his love for speed to his grandfather who is an avid drag racer. In preparation for the World Championships, Julius will be heading to the Heart of Dixie Palomino Exhibitors Association (HOPE) Horse Show at the Lauderdale Agri-Center in Meridian, Mississippi in October to compete in the timed events.
For individuals that want to cheer on the duo as they race through the arena, further information about the show is located on the HOPE Facebook page.
