A new chapter for First Baptist Church Louisville began recently when Heath Hillman, pastor, took the leadership helm of the church.
He preached his first sermon as the new pastor on Sept. 1.
Hillman and his family moved to Winston County from Ocean Springs. He previously pastored at Emmanuel Baptist Church in Ocean Springs from 2012 to 2019.
“I was able to find a church (Emmanuel Baptist Church in Ocean Springs) that took a chance on a person who never served as a pastor before,” said Hillman.
Hillman practiced law for 10 years before seeking a place behind a pulpit rather than in front of the jury box.
“God called me to preach as a sophomore in college but I resisted and pursued law,” said Hillman. “He (God) let me be successful but not happy.”
Hillman has found his joy with pastoring and providing God’s word and was glad to bring that to Winston County.
Hillman’s connection to Winston County comes from the positive relationship he developed with Winston County Circuit Clerk Kim Ming, whom he met when he was working with the Secretary of State’s office.
“It was an incredible feeling to become part of the church’s mission here,” said Hillman. “ This church has over 180 years of leadership in Mississippi and among the Southern Baptist.”
“It is a profound honor to serve this church,” added Hillman.
With the new pastor, First Baptist Church Louisville is aiming to grow its flock.
“The desire to serve has energized my ministry,” said Hillman. “It is what gets me out of bed.”
He added, “It is a great calling to help lead the church, help others find their gifts to serve and get everyone in the church rowing together.”
Hillman feels that every church is facing a changing culture and that the ministry, outreach and worship must address.
“If we are going to welcome persons into the church, we must demonstrate that the church stands for something and has meaning in the community, “ said Hillman.
“We have to make sure people know we care and this will make people want to hear about Jesus Christ and Christ’s love,” added Hillman.
Hillman noted that the Winston County community has been very welcoming.
“The community has reached out and accepted someone not from here and it is a joy to meet the people,” said Hillman.
He added, “Everyone has been opening and welcoming during this transition.”
Hillman is ready to lead the church on its future path.
“I am really excited about being part of the church and its history. We are in a position to reach a new generation with the message and gospel of Jesus Christ,” said Hillman.
Hillman and his wife of 24 years, Elgen, have 2 daughters: Olivia, 17 and Maryn, 14.
