Louisville’s boys put together three wins in as many days last week to claim the championship of the East Webster Christmas Classic Tournament.
The Wildcats downed Winston Academy 97-48 last Thursday, then gutted out a 42-38 win over Baldwyn in the tournament semifinals on Friday. Saturday, the Wildcats got off to a torrid start and held on for a 77-69 win over the host Wolverines from East Webster.
Those three wins lifted Louisville’s boys to 12-2 on the season. The Wildcats and Lady Wildcats – who were off last week after running their record to 12-1 – are both scheduled to host Kosciusko on Friday in their district openers.
Next week, Louisville is scheduled to go to Leake Central on Tuesday (Jan. 9) and then host rival Noxubee County on Friday, Jan. 12.
The Wildcats got a game-high 29 points from Tequavious Brags and rolled to an easy win over Winston Academy in last Thursday’s opening round of the East Webster tournament.
Louisville erupted for 31 points in the first quarter and was up 52-34 at halftime. Coach Kenyon Ross’ squad then went off for 34 points in the third quarter and coasted to the win.
Vasedrick Culberson (15 points) and Kendarius Chambers (12 points) were also in double figures for Louisville, while Shemar Eiland just missed with nine points. Keyshawn Gladney chipped in eight points and Braylen Lane tossed in six.
In Friday’s semifinals, the Wildcats shook off a slow start and won a defensive struggle with Baldwyn.
The Class 2A and tradition-rich Bearcats held Louisville to just four points in the first quarter and led 20-12 at halftime. LHS outscored Baldwyn 14-8 in the third quarter and 16-10 in the fourth to post the win and move into the championship game of the eight-team tournament.
Brags led the Wildcats with nine points, while Chambers, Eiland and Ashanti Cistrunk all scored six points in the win.
Against East Webster in the finals, the Wildcats used a big first and fourth quarter to knock off the Wolverines.
Louisville erupted for 27 points in the first quarter to build a 15-point lead, only to see East Webster pull within 39-32 at halftime.
The Wolverines got within 51-48 going into the fourth quarter, where Louisville outscored them 26-21.
Chambers tallied 15 points to lead a balanced scoring attack for the Wildcats, while Gladney scored 14. Deonte Yarbrough scored 13, Eiland scored 11 and Brags chipped in eight.
