The Louisville Fire Department is excited to announce its upcoming annual Fire Academy for Kids that will take place July 23 through July 27.
This event, sponsored by The City of Louisville Fire Department, is a great opportunity for children to engage with exciting and fun-filled learning activities that encourage fire safety and promote teamwork and self-discipline while also teaching children about the duties and responsibilities of firefighters. The camp is for ages 7 to 12 and requires a fee of $15 to cover the cost of the T-shirts and a cake on July 27.
During the week, children will be instructed on how to operate a fire extinguisher, ladder, and hose as well as practice escape plans, crawling, going through windows, and testing smoke alarms.
In addition, children will receive special instructions on Emergency Management Assistance, first aid, and drugs.
On Friday, July 27, there will be a “Wet and Wild Day” so children will need to bring a change of clothes and a towel, and at noon the Fire Department will cook lunch for the campers.
Class will begin at 8 AM each morning and end by 12 PM, except for Friday where it will end at 1 PM. Children can only be brought to camp 5 minutes early and must be picked up no later than 12:05. Snacks will be provided for the children each day.
While the Fire Department will provide plenty of water and frequent breaks for the children throughout the day, they encourage parents to send sunscreen for their children since some of the activities will take place outdoors. Homework will be given to campers following class on Monday, and parents/guardians are strongly encouraged to help their child with these assignments as it can be very beneficial in helping to prevent accidents at home. Homework must be signed and returned by Friday, July 27.
LFD firefighter Detrick Sanders encourages all children to participate and parents/guardians are welcome to attend camp with their children as well: “It would be an honor to have you with us.”
If you would like your child to be a part of this fun event, you can find registration forms at City Hall or the Louisville Fire Department.
Contact Detrick Sanders or Chief Johnnie Haynes if you have any questions. The Louisville Fire Department looks forward to seeing you at camp.
