The Winston Master Gardner’s had the opportunity last Saturday to tour MSU’s Rose Garden, and the Trial Gardens located on the MAFES North Farm facility at MSU. Dr. Geoff Denny MSU Assistant Extension Professor gave the group much insight as to how the State’s commercial nursery business operates, and the challenges it faces with today’s horticulture consumers.
He also, taught rose propagation, varieties, pruning techniques, and the tools every gardener should have at their disposal. The day’s time at the Trial Garden consisted of a walking tour of many different tree and shrub species, and how the environment reacts to garden techniques throughout insect, bird, and mammal ecology.
The tour had something for every aspect of the garden, and so much educational content that everyone walk away becoming more familiar with our own surroundings, and garden communities in Mississippi, even nationwide.
It was a truly great way to spend a Saturday morning; that is if you appreciate gardening, and learning how to be a better steward of your garden or the gardening community. Of course this is exactly what our Master Gardner’s are all about. Mississippi’s Master Gardner organization is about learning in-depth aspects of the garden, environment, service, and teaching what they’ve learned to their community. The knowledge gained within our Winston Master Gardner’s through events like this is available to all, just ask a Master Gardner what you’d like to know about your garden, and you’ll likely get some very informed guidance, and advise.
Many thanks to our Winston Master Gardner’s, and Dr. Geoff Denny for making this tour a truly educational, and enjoyable experience.
