“A thing of beauty is a joy forever.”
Lisa Stewart, Webster County Extension Office, presented the program for the Maben Home and Garden Club on March 20 at the No Way Jose Restaurant in Starkville.
The focus of the program was on hummingbirds. Stewart passed out info sheets filled with helpful hints for “birders”: (1) Do not put red dye in the nectar, (2) Use Vaseline on feeder chain to keep ants away; cooking spray works too, (3) Use Clorox water to wash the feeders and (4) included the recipe for the feeders – one part sugar to four parts of water and microwave till it boils and then refrigerate.
She also passed out info sheets listing the different plants that attract hummingbirds, enumerating the kinds the come to Mississippi, and other interesting facts about them. She handed out colorful sheets filled with pictures of hummingbirds and flowers to which they are attracted. After some discussion about sightings of birds in the area and questions from the members, the program ended with a round of applause. The program leader for March was Pat Harpole.
President Templeton called the meeting to order and various reports were given. The March Yard of the Month sign went to Randle and Jackie Poss. The sign was placed by Sylvia Templeton.
The slate of officers were presented and elected as follows: president, Dee Saylors; vice president, Jane Collins; secretary, Lynn Head; and treasurer, Martha McMinn.
The members were reminded of the Everything Garden Expo on March 24-25 at the Mississippi Horse Park in Starkville.
It was also decided that the April meeting will be held at the House of Memories in Tomnolen.
Pots of spring flowers were given by Pat Harpole as door prizes.
After a period of socialization the members dispersed until April 17 at the House of Memories.
