The Mississippi Highway Patrol concluded its 2019 Fourth of July enforcement period which began Wednesday, July 3, at 12:01 a.m. and ended Thursday, July 4, at midnight. Throughout the period, MHP issued 3300 citations with 43 DUI arrests. A total of 63 crashes were investigated including 1 fatality and 9 injuries on state, federal highways, and interstate systems. As the MHP “Drive Right Mississippi” safety initiative continues through the heavily traveled month of July, we urge motorists to obey the Left Hand Law, avoid driver distractions, and ensure everyone is properly restrained.
On Wednesday, July 3, 2019 at approximately 04:49 p.m., the Mississippi Highway Patrol responded to a fatal crash in Clarke County. A 2006 Toyota passenger vehicle driven by Zquavius Crain, 20, of Gulfport, MS was traveling southbound on I-59. Vehicle left the roadway, collided with trees and overturned. Zquavius Crain was pronounced dead on scene. Right front passenger Keon Moore, 20, of Gulfport, MS and right rear passenger Jeremiah Brazil, 20, of Gulfport, MS were transported to a local hospital due to injuries sustained in crash.
This crash remains under investigation by MHP.
