The Maben Lions Club has enjoyed great programs this past March.
On March 12 we learned so much about the programs at the T.K. Martin Center for Technology and Disability on the campus of Mississippi State University. The director, Janie Cirlot, shared with the members a colorful brochure that described the four areas of service to adults and children:
1) Assistive Technology Services “allowing individuals to participate in educational, vocational and leisure activities to the fullest degree they choose”;
2) Camp Jabber Jaw “established to provide a fun way for individuals to develop improved interactive communication skills”;
3) Express yourself, which “uses the techniques of Artistic Realization Technologies to provide a means for Mississippians with the most severe physical disabilities to feel the power of self-expression through art”;
4) and Project Impact, which “is a program serving the early intervention needs of children in Mississippi by providing a family-friendly approach involving both parents and caregivers as essential participants in the evaluation, intervention and follow-through.” (Quotes are from the brochure.)
March 26
The next program on March 26 featured the two teen girls who attended Lions of Mississippi Girls Leadership Conference earlier that month. Chloe Westmoreland and Lexy Lucas, both juniors at East Webster High School, were sponsored by the Maben Lions Club.
Both girls reported on the many activities they participated in during the long weekend at Roosevelt State Park near Morton. They told about visiting with the new Miss Mississippi, who described her experience competing for the title and entertained the group of girls from all over the state with her beautiful vocal performance.
They especially enjoyed the instruction they received in self-defense, the chance to design and model a dress made from newspaper, and participate in the talent contest.
The conference is designed to develop leadership skills in high school students. Both Chloe and Lexy expressed their gratitude to have been able to attend this informative conference.
