This summer the Lions Clubs of Mississippi sponsored a diabetes camp for young people dealing with Type 1 or 2 diabetes or have been diagnosed with prediabetes.
This summer was the first of these camps held at the Sea and Sun Camp near Biloxi. The Maben Lions Club helped Aleah Graham, who is prediabetic, attend the camp with her parents, Robert and Rose Graham.
Aleah, a recent graduate of Starkville High School, came to the Maben Lions Club meeting on June 11 to relate to the members her experience at the camp.
She brought an attractive trifold display board that featured photos taken at the camp. This helped her explain the activities she enjoyed and the information she gained on how to keep her prediabetic condition from progressing to full-blown diabetes status.
She told us that she had learned to count carbs, eat a good diet, exercise correctly and monitor her blood sugar. She also showed us pictures of the interesting people she met there, and of the lake, dining room, classrooms and cabins where they stayed.
Rose and Aleah both expressed to the club their appreciation for helping them to financially make the trip as a family. Anyone of junior or senior high school age and has a diabetes diagnosis is of the correct age to attend.
If you know of someone who fits this profile, ask him or her to contact a Lion in Eupora or Maben for more information about attending this valuable camp in June 2020 to learn more about how to manage their condition.
