The Maben Home and Garden Club has been meeting for over 57 years with ladies of Maben that are interested in civic and home beautification, floral design, landscaping, plant identification and butterflies.
On Nov. 19, they met at the Maben Public Library with Julie Fulgham as the featured speaker, who demonstrated how to make quick and easy wreaths.
She began her talk by telling some history of wreaths and their uses: for funerals, birth announcements, holidays, festivals and just door decorations. She made one with a wire frame and rags tied around it and then attached a bow to the top. Then she showed how to make one with an embroidery hoop and cloth and a bow.
Last she made a traditional grapevine wreath with an already-made pick, silk flowers and some fabric as a bow. All neatly and quickly made and then donated to the club to use as door prizes, which were won by Ann Harrison, Dottie Dewberry and Kay Lewis.
The Yard of the Month sign was placed in the yard of Kathy Marler by Kay Lewis.
Martha McMinn, calendar chairman, announced that the calendars would be in next month; and she encouraged all to get them delivered before the new year.
The Garden Therapy committee, Ann Harrison and Kathy Davis, had sacks for each member to deliver to area shut-ins. Hand Print Turkey decorations for the sack front were made by Carol Ballard’s class. “They are Adorable.”
Dottie Dewberry gave a brief explanation of the boxes on Second Avenue — donations from area citizens whose families have lived here for generations: Shuffield, Norwood, Doss, Scrivener, Johnson and Sansing.
On Dec. 10, the club will sojourn to the home of Julie Fulgham for the annual Christmas Party. Members can expect to play Dirty Santa and enjoy traditional holiday food.
There was a brief discussion of the last meeting in May at French Camp and arranging to meet in the old building, where the club will have officer installation.
A proposal was made that the club revert back to the 3:30 or 4 p.m. meeting time so a more diverse group of people could make the meetings.
The afternoon devotion, titled “Beautifully Burdened,” and blessing for the meal was given by Sylvia Templeton.
The meeting adjourned until Dec. 10.
