The Maben Home and Garden ladies were entertained April 16 by Lisa Stewart, Webster County Extension Service, who was speaking about bird identification, bird feeders, bird calls and just general info about birds in our yards.
She handed out colorful sheets of “Common Backyard Birds in Mississippi,” “Birdzilla.com” and “Using Plants to Attract Wildlife.” The noonday program was a general question-and-answer flow of information pertaining to attracting birds, keeping hummingbird feeders filled and cleaned, and learning to identify birds by their sound.
One of the most interesting tidbits of commentary was about warding off buzzards: hang a dead one in a tree and it will scare off the others. Beware that it is against the law to kill a buzzard.
The afternoon business meeting pertained to committee reports: minutes, treasurer’s report, Yard of the Month (John and Sandra Byars), new flags to be placed, Sweet Bay magnolia trees to be planted on Water Street and the donation of “Southern Birds Backyard Guide” to the Maben Library.
The election of 2019-20 officers was voted on as follows: president, Jane Collins; vice president, Julie Fulgham; secretary, Sylvia Templeton; and treasurer, Martha McMinn.
A letter of resignation of membership was read to the club from Jackie Poss.
The afternoon door prizes, which were donated by Martha McMinn, were won by Kay Lewis, Joyce Hays, Joe Ann Williams and Cathy Dodd Davis. The door prizes were pots of geraniums.
The devotion and the blessing were presented by Dee Saylors Vail, which was titled “Go Home and Tell.”
The May meeting will be the installation of the new officers. The meeting will also be held at the Olde Town Bakery on May 21.
