Freedom Ranch came to the Maben Public Library on July 2!
Krissy and Mindy brought birds of prey. They brought a turkey vulture, a talking crow, eastern screech owl, barred owl, a couple of rats named Slim and Beauty, and a red-tailed hawk. A couple of volunteers got to feel the rats crawl on them.
Each animal had its own story of how they came to Freedom Ranch. Some were injured or found in backyard and petted so couldn’t be put back in the wild.
One tufted-toed owl named Rosa was named after Rosa Parks because after being petted when the family tried to set it free, it kept coming back to a park bench and wouldn’t move.
The children enjoyed watching the owls move their heads, 270 degree, but not all the way around. They also sent Mariah, a turkey vulture, across the room. The kids and adults loved it!
The crow was a smart crow. She could talk, pick up her toys and match colors. Some of the things she said were hello, Krissy, gobble, caw, hoot and Leah.
The children petted the rats and got their pictures taken with the vulture and owl.
