We had a special visitor Friday at the Maben Public Library. We are learning about community helpers so our Maben fire chief, Wayne Yeatman, came and talked to us about fire safety.
He showed the children what a smoke alarm looks like and told some things to do to keep them working properly, change batteries twice a year and dust them with canned air.
They also learned to call 911 in an emergency and to learn their address so they can tell them where to come. Mr. Yeatman had a house number that you can get from the fire department to make it easier for the fireman to find you. It is reflective and can be easily seen at night.
He told them to have a plan of escape in case of fire and to practice it at night in the dark because it will be dark if there is a fire. Also to never go back in to get anything or anyone. That is the fireman’s job because they have special equipment that keeps them from harm. You should have a meeting place so that parents will know when everyone is out.
He also talked about kitchen safety. Make sure you turn pot handles to the back so that they won’t be easily knocked over. Also make sure when you plug small appliances in that they are plugged in tight. If not they can cause enough of a spark to catch fire.
There are other safety things parents need to learn and teach their children. He had pamphlets with more information and coloring books, bracelets and fireman’s helmets for all the children to take home.
In attendance Friday were Adelyn and John Wyatt Parker; Kinsley Dodd; Maddox Huffman; Joshua, Lydia and Mason Thornton; Rani, Andrew, Jonas and James Walter Scrivener; Bo, Kaylee and Abel Berry; Elishava and Ian Barrett; and Troop and Vivie Halford.
