Outside agencies are handling the investigation into the wounding of a man by a Webster County deputy following a multicounty chase.
Saturday’s chase started in Webster, went through Calhoun and ended in Grenada County, according to Webster County Sheriff Tim Mitchell and Grenada County Sheriff Alton Strider.
Strider said he understand that the pursuit began after a man turned around to evade a law enforcement roadblock in Webster County and sped away. The driver was later identified as Robert L. Salley, 44, of Gore Springs, according to Strider, who said Salley had a female passenger.
A Webster County deputy was among those who pursued him in a high-speed chase, police scanner traffic from the Calhoun County Sheriff’s Department indicated. At one point an officer could be heard saying the other driver swerved toward him in an attempt to knock him off the road. The Grenada County Sheriff’s Department and Mississippi Highway Patrol were also notified to respond, according to the scanner traffic.
Strider said the pursuit went through Calhoun County, including on Highway 8, and ended on Pleasant Grove Road in the area of the District 3 maintenance barn in Grenada County, where Salley finally stopped at his house. Scanner traffic indicated that this occurred about 1:30 p.m.
Mitchell said shots were fired at one point by the Webster County deputy, resulting in Salley receiving superficial wounds. An ambulance from Grenada responded to the scene and Salley was transported to the hospital in Oxford, where Mitchell said he was treated and released within 30 minutes.
Mitchell said the case has been turned over to the Grenada County Sheriff’s Department and Mississippi Bureau of Investigation. He said he could provide no further information as the investigation continues.
Strider said Salley is being in the Grenada County Jail, charged with aggravated assault with a vehicle on the Webster County deputy and two counts of contempt of court. His bond totals $12,000. Salley’s passenger was not charged, said Strider.
