Dean Park, on Hwy. 15 South, suffered major damage in the 2014 tornado, including a large number of downed trees, the loss of the north side of the pavilion roof, and most of the fencing, as well as damage to some of the lights. There was also damage to some asphalt surfaces during the debris and tree removal process. In addition to these repairs grills and benches from the picnic areas had to be replaced.
As with most recovery efforts, it has been a long, painstaking process, but Dean Park is almost back to normal. Most of the recovery work has been completed, with only a few projects remaining.
Part of the recovery project is a storm shelter, rated for 250 mph winds. Dean Park Board President, Paul Coburn stated that the shelter is rated for about 35 people, but if necessary could protect as many as 100 people for a short period of time.
Coburn said, “We can take our hats off to the Board of Supervisors for giving us this.” Board Member Carolyn Hampton pointed out that the Supervisors built the handicapped ramp for the shelter. Hampton added, “They (the Board of Supervisors) have offered a lot of support.”
As well as the recovery effort has gone there is still work to be done. Coburn stated that the tennis court needs to be resurfaced, some work on the parking lot lighting remains. Hampton added that they would like to add a walking trail to the area behind the pond, and the funding process for that project is in the initial stages.
Dean Park, named in honor of former county agent Milton Dean, has been a fixture for many decades, and is still a popular destination for many within Winston County. The park has a children’s playground, basketball court, tennis court, baseball field, pavilion and a number of picnic areas. Different areas of the park can be reserved, and the entire park is available for certain events. And there are surveillance cameras in place, covering the entire park, to foster a safe environment. The park is fully funded by Winston County.
Anyone wanting to donate funds can contact Coburn, Hampton or any of the other board members: John Edwards, Willie James Holman and Annie Pearl Hudson, or Elmetra Patterson, acting President of the Friends of Dean Park.
