The Cross of Christ roadside cross project at the intersection of highways 82 and 9 will be a constant reminder of our area’s Christian commitment.
During this project, many pastors and church members in the vicinity have been asked, “What does the cross mean to you?”
Pastor Michael Simmons of Mt. Harmon and Rockport United Methodist churches in Choctaw County reflects, “When I think of the cross, I’m reminded of the heartache and betrayal of Joseph in the hands of his brothers. They wanted to bring him low, because they didn’t understand his dreams.
“But in the end, Joseph stands before his brothers and says, ‘But as for you, ye thought evil against me; but God meant it unto good, to bring to pass, as it is this day, to save much people alive (Genesis 50:20).’
“The sole purpose of the cross was to bring excruciating death to the guilty lawbreaker. Israel demanded it, Rome commanded it, Judas betrayed him, Christ submitted to it, God predetermined it, Satan orchestrated it and we as sinners needed it.
“So, Jesus without fault, took all the bad this world had to offer for generations to come, bore it on the cross that we might have life, more abundantly. On that cross Jesus turned our hopeless end to endless hope.”
The Gift of
Eternal Salvation
Fran Pittman of Philadelphia Baptist Church in Cadaretta states, “When I look at the cross, I have the deepest feeling of joy. I know that on an old rugged cross, many years ago, my Savior gave his life for me so that I might have eternal salvation and live with him forever in heaven.
“When I look at the cross, I see my Savior willingly giving his life, being so beaten that he was unrecognizable. I imagine the pain and sorrow in his eyes, yet I see what great love and sacrifice He had for me. My sins were taken to that cross; not only my sins, but the sins of the world.
“For those who are Christians and believers, we understand his great love and his gift of eternal salvation; but, the world does not understand.
“If you are one of those who cannot imagine how this can be, I urge you to get a Bible and read, contact a Bible preacher and learn how to become a child of God; so that you may have the peace and joy that comes from Christ on the cross giving the gift of eternal salvation. This is why the cross is so special to me.”
