One of the candidates for Northern District transportation commissioner made a campaign stop in Eupora last week.
Republican candidate John Caldwell of Nesbit swung through Webster County on Friday. He is promoting better roads and better jobs, and said he believes Mississippi can move quickly to make a real difference.
Caldwell spent 32 years in the Marines, retiring as a colonel and combat veteran. He is a former president of the DeSoto County Board of Supervisors, and is a former transportation director and chief emergency management officer for the DeSoto County Schools.
Caldwell said during an interview he is the only candidate with experience in elected office. He said his time working as a supervisor made him responsible to the needs of local residents on a one-on-one basis.
Caldwell said his focus at the Mississippi Department of Transportation will be directing transportation projects toward economic development, job creation and a better quality of life.
“Better roads are tied to better jobs,” he said.
Caldwell will on Tuesday’s Republican primary ballot along with Trey Bowman, E.A. Hathcock, Jeremy A. Martin and Geoffrey O. Yoste.
A runoff will be Aug. 27 if necessary. The Republican primary winner will face lone Democrat Joe T. “Joey” Grist in the November general election to succeed
