The Town of Weir has a new mayor following the recent Special Election April 24.
Former Weir Alderwoman Shuni Coffey won the special election April 24 for the position of Mayor of Weir against former mayor Lee James. Coffey received 74 votes during the election while James received 67 votes.
The Special Election was held following the announcement made by former mayor Danny McNutt that he would be resigning from his position during the March 13 Weir Aldermen meeting.
With Coffey becoming mayor, the Town of Weir will conduct a Special Election pursuant to Miss. Code Ann. Sec. 23-15-857 (Supp. 2017) for the vacant office of Alderman as a result of the special election.
The special election will be Tuesday, June 19, 2018 from 7 a.m. until 7 p.m. at the Fire Department located at 46 Ann Street in Weir. In the event no one candidate receives a majority of the votes, the candidates will have their names placed on the ballot for a run-off election which, if required, will be Tuesday, July 10, 2018 from 7 a.m. until 7 p.m. at the Fire Department in Weir.
Any person desiring to be a candidate for the office of Alderman of the Town of Weir must file their petition with the Town Clerk at Town Hall (360 Front Street, Weir, MS 39772) no later than 5 p.m. Wednesday, May 30, 2018.
The Petition must be signed by fifteen (15) qualified electors of the Town of Weir. There is no qualifying fee to run for this office and petitions are available at Town Hall at no charge.
Meet the Mayor reception slated for May 29

The Choctaw County Chamber of Commerce and the Town of Weir invites the public to the Meet the Mayor Reception to welcome Shuni Coffey as the new Mayor of Weir. The reception will be held Tuesday, May 29 from 3:30 – 5pm at the Weir Library. The Weir Library is in the back of Weir Town Hall on Front Street in Weir.
Shuni Coffey was elected as Mayor of Weir on April 24 in a special election.
