Tanner Threadgill is a two-sport star in football and baseball at Choctaw County, but will confine his talents to the gridiron at Belhaven. He signed with Belhaven for football Tuesday.
“The (Belhaven) coaches told me I could play both, but I'm only going to play football,” he said.
Choctaw County football coach Ben Ashley praised Threadgill's work ethic. “He's a good kid who thrived in the weight room. Belhaven is getting a good one.”
As a senior in the fall, Threadgill was a key member of the Charger football team that won Region 5-3A and reached the third round of the MHSAA playoffs. A 6-2, 230-pound defensive end, he had 72 tackles, including 13 for losses and five sacks. Threadgill also did the punting for the Chargers, averaging 31.9 yards for 22 kicks.
He said Belhaven recruited him to be a stand up defensive end. He doesn't expect to do any punting.
“It's a good school,” he said of his decision to sign with Belhaven. “I went on a visit and enjoyed it. It's really nice.”
Belhaven is an NCAA Division III school, located in Jackson, that is a member of the American Southwest Conference.
He plans to study engineering, with a possible goal of becoming a petroleum engineer.
Threadgill is also one of the top hitters on the Chargers' baseball team with a .368 batting average through the first eight games.
