Choctaw County High School linebacker Israel Whitmore has verbally committed to play football for Arkansas Sate University beginning in 2020.
The 6-foot-2, 220-pound senior has recorded 231 tackles over the last two year including 138 as a sophomore.
The ASU Red Wolves, who compete in the Sun Belt Conference, finished last season 8-5 closing out the year with a 16-13 overtime loss to Nevada in the Arizona Bowl.
This year Arkansas State has two major schools on their schedule, hosting SMU in Jonesboro, Ark. on Aug. 31 and hitting the road to face the University of Georgia on Sept. 14.
Choctaw County High School is set to take on Pontotoc in a jamboree game at Mississippi State University on Aug. 16, before opening the regular season at home on Aug. 23 against Independence.
PRACTICE TIME HAS BEGUN
Four MHSAA sanctioned sports can begin official practice in July. Slow-Pitch softball was actually able to begin practice on July 22, while Volleyball, Swimming and Cross-Country were allowed to begin on July 29.
Classic games for Softball are Aug. 5-6, with the regular season beginning on Aug. 10 and coming to an end on Oct. 1. For Volleyball, the classics are Aug. 9-10 with the first match on Aug. 13 and the final regular season match on Oct. 15.
The first cross country meet can be held on Aug. 10.
Football practice begins on Aug. 5 with scrimmages allowed on Aug. 16 and Classic games set for Aug. 22 or 23. Classic games for all sports do count on the regular season record.
CCHS CHARGER TIDBITS
— The Lady Chargers will begin the 2019 Volleyball season in the Set It Off Tourney at Ridgeland on Aug. 9-10. That will be followed by three consecutive home matches beginning with an Aug. 13 contest with Starkville, followed by Aug. 15 with New Hope and Wrapped up Aug. 30 against Kemper County.
— The Choctaw Cross-Country team has an organizational meeting set for Tuesday at 6 p.m. at Glasgow Park in Ackerman. It is for seventh graders through seniors.
