The Choctaw County boys and girls basketball teams both had a win and a loss last week in the first two Region 4-3A games of the season.
The Chargers lost to Houston 60-52, then defeated Aberdeen 44-35. It was the reverse for the Lady Chargers with a 45-40 overtime victory over Houston and a 53-28 loss to Aberdeen.
The Chargers got off to a slow start in both games, trailing Houston 38-17 at the half and Aberdeen 16-4 after one quarter.
Against Aberdeen, the Chargers cut the deficit to 25-19 at the half, then took the lead by outscoring the Bulldogs 15-5 in the third quarter. “We came back and played really well,” said coach Gary Beals. The key, he said, was going to a full court press.
Jared Bellew led Choctaw County with 12 points and eight rebounds.
Choctaw County lost the Houston game at the free throw line, making only four of 16 shots to 16 of 25 for Houston. Free throw shooting has been a problem all season, with the Chargers shooting 51 percent.
Zay Coleman scored 14 points and Tylan Carter 11 for Choctaw County. Xavier Virges led Houston with 16 points.
Jalia James led the Lady Chargers in the victory over Houston with 13 points, including a three-pointer in overtime. LaGenesis Johnson scored 12 points.
“Great team effort,” said coach Mandy Jewell.
But that wasn't the case against Aberdeen. “Just a bad game from start to finish,” she said. Johnson scored 18 points.
The Chargers and Lady Chargers played East Webster Tuesday and have Region 4-3A home games with Hatley Friday.
