The Mississippi Democratic and Republican parties have released the names of candidates who have qualified to run for federal office.
Primary Election Day for the U.S. Senate and U.S. House of Representatives is June 5. The 2018 qualifying period for Democratic and Republican primary elections in those races officially closed Thursday afternoon.
These are Democratic Party candidates for this year's federal elections:
For U.S. Senate:
David Baria of Bay St. Louis
Jensen Bohren of Benton
Jerone Garland of Kosciusko
Victor G. Maurice Jr. of Pass Christian
Omeria Scott of Laurel
Howard Sherman of Meridian
For House District 1:
Randy Wadkins of Oxford
These are Republican Party candidates for this year's federal elections:
For U.S. Senate:
Richard Boyanton
Chris McDaniel
Roger Wicker (incumbent)
For House District 1:
Trent Kelly (incumbent)
The executive committees of each party must certify the potential candidates. Anyone interested in working as a pollworker for the June 5 primaries may contact the Webster County Circuit Clerk’s Office at 258-6287.
In related developments, Republican U.S. Sen. Thad Cochran on Monday announced his intention to resign effective April 1. Cochran, 80, cited ongoing health reasons for his decision to retire.
Gov. Phil Bryant will have 10 days from April 1 to appoint a temporary officeholder, and Mississippians will vote in a special election on Nov. 6 to fill the seat for the remainder of the term through 2020.
