This is an opportunity for the community to donate blood to those in need. According to the Red Cross, one blood donation can save up to three lives and someone requires a blood donation every two seconds in the United States. Blood donations are required for surgeries, cancer treatment, chronic illnesses and traumatic injuries. According to the Red Cross, no matter the situation that facilitates the need, blood donation is an essential and generous act that benefits someone every two seconds in the United States. The Red Cross denotes that the summer often has blood supply shortages for hospitals.
Persons may denote whole blood or give “double red” blood, which takes about 20 minutes longer. Also, there is a special need for type O donors to give double red cell donations. It is the universal blood type and in trauma situations, doctors reach for O-negative blood first. Type O-positive blood can be transfused to anyone with a positive blood type – that’s 85 percent of the population.
Physical requirements for double red cell donors: Men must weight at least 130 pounds and be 5’1” tall. Women must weigh at least 150 pounds and be 5’5” tall.
