THE ACKERMAN RECORD
September 20, 1901, Vol. 3, No. 28 (CONTINUED):
LOCALS AND PERSONALS: The habeas corpus trial of Dr. Joe Ware before
Chancellor Muldrow last week resulted in his getting bail in the sum
of $1000.00 which was promptly given. - Alex and Jan Jones, charged
with murdering Eli Job Hopkins of Winston a few weeks ago, have a
habeas corpus trial before Chanceller Byrd today at this place asking
for bail. - Dr. John Kolb returned from Memphis last Friday where he
spent several days buying goods . - Our ever good friend, Mr. Dave
H. Quinn, has put aside that somber look that once adorned his
physiognomy and now sports a smile that indicates that his heart is
glad. The reason for all this is because he has a new fine girl at
his house. - Our good friend, Dave F. Wise, of Bywy, was in town
last Saturday and had us advance the name of his son Fred on our books
up to 1902. Fred is one of Choctaw’s enterprising young men. He has
been at Moss Point quite awhile and has a splendid job there. Bywy
produces more Wise men that any part of our county.
Our recently appointed handsome young Post Master, Mr. Henry
L. Rhodes, gave an infallible evidence this week of his fitness for
the new duties soon to develop upon as Postmaster of our town. To be
more explicit he paid cash in advance for the RECORD. No man can give
a better evidence of the fact that he is sure everything will be all
right. In reference to Henry Rhodes he is upright and alright and
will make a splendid postmaster. - Our young friend O. T. Eddleman,
formerly of Weir office, and one of Choctaw’s brightest young men,
writes us from Isola to let the RECORD keep a coming down his way.
Words could not be more refreshing to us, or more readily complied
with, Mr. Eddleman is an example of what upright conduct and
forge-aheadedness can accomplish. Recently he took a course in the
Grenada business college and now he holds a good position with a
first-class mercantile firm at Isola. We always sincerely rejoice in
seeing young men marching up to the front.
The Ackerman Graded High School opened Monday morning with a large
attendance. The faculty is: Principal, J. R. Tipton; First Asst., J.
Myrick Harris, Second Asst., Miss Ida Cole; Instructor in Primary
department, Miss Dallie Riley. Recently the town authorities
purchased the Masonic Hall, which was the second story of the main
school hall, and that has been transformed into a school room and is
used by the higher grades. We understand that the school opened under
most gratifying auspices. Several prominent citizens were on hand
Monday morning and timely and interesting addresses were made by Mr.
J. A. McKinnon, W. J. Daniel, Esq., and Senator J. L. Seawright, all
three of them are members of the board of trustees.
The K. & L. of Honor meet every 2nd and 4th Monday nights. A full
attendance if requested at the next meeting.
