LOCAL HAPPENINGS (Continued): Mrs. Bert Ebeling of Courtland was called to the bedside of her father, Mr. R. J. Atkinson, who is seriously ill. - We are requested to say that the Philathea Sunday School Class of the Baptist Church will sell Ice Cream on Field Day, Friday, March 25th. - Get ready for Clean Up Day. The County Health officer, Dr. Montgomery, will set the date later. - Miss Suzell Thomlinson came down from Ackerman and spent Sunday with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Tomlinson. - James Davis of Laurel spent a few days here this week with this father, Dr. H. H. Davis. - Dr. Montgomery has an article in this issue which should interest those who wish to have a clean town. - Mr. and Mrs. S. M. Jordan carried their children, Sid Jr. and Elizabeth to Memphis hospital the past Saturday for treatment. - Mrs. A. E. Miller and little daughter Martha visited the former’s parents at Philadelphia the past Sunday. - Dick Davis came over from Tupelo and spent a few days here last week with his father, Dr. H. H. Davis. On account of failing health Prof. McCune, Hall teacher at the Louisville High School, resigned his position this week, and left for his home in Winona. Mr. Byron Smith of Houston has been appointed to fill his position in the school, and assumed the place Monday morning.
Mrs. Brooks Ezell and interesting little daughter are visiting in Pelahatchie this week. - Mr. J. H. Friar, Superintendent of the Creosote Works here for some months, has resigned his position and gone to Louisiana where he has accepted a like position. Mr. and Mrs. Friar made many friends while here who regret very much to see them leave. Mr. Dunkin of New Orleans will take Mr. Friar’s place here.
The death of Mr. J. P. McGraw a few days ago brought to attention that he was the oldest man of our town, and now the possessor of that treasure is Mr. J. F. McMillin who is I this 84th year, and although in feeble health, he is still able to be on our streets occasionally, where he always meets a hearty and honored welcome by our people. The oldest person, however, is one of our town’s most worthy, Christian women, Mrs. Mary Metts, who is in her 93rd year and is yet extremely active for one of her years. Another of our old citizens is Mr. R. J. Atkinson, who is in his 82nd year and we regret to say, is very ill at this time.
Mr. and Mrs. Houston Dempsey from A. & M. College and Dr. Terrill Dempsey from Toccopola visited their parents, Mr. and Mrs. W. E. Dempsey west of town last Friday and Saturday. - Mr. A. G. Schuler, who did the tin work on the new Presbyterian church and also on the new roof of Mr. J. M. Harris, left Wednesday for his home at Starkville, and asked us to state that if there are others who have such work to be done that he would be glad to hear from them. Address him at Starkville. - Tomato Plants – I have nice, large tomato plants at 10 cents per dozen, or three dozen for 25 cents. B. M. CLARK - CONCERT: There will be a Concert at Bevils Hill school house Friday, March 25th. Everybody invited to come. Admission 10 and 20 cents. - Barred Rock Eggs, $1.00 per setting. GOOD WOMAN DIES SUDDENLY: The community west of town was surprised and shocked on last Friday afternoon when the death of Mrs. Charlie Wilks was announced. Mrs. Wilks was at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Jesse Estes, where she was taken ill from exposure received during a storm which destroyed her home a few nights previous. She was not thought to be seriously ill, but due to heart failure, her death was sudden. Mrs. Wilkes was a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. D. C. Bennett and was a good woman, who was held in high esteem by all who knew her. She leaves a husband and three children, to whom we offer condolence.
NOXAPATER NEWS: Mrs. C. C. Reed was the charming hostess to the Woman’s Missionary Society Monday afternoon when an interesting program was put on by the Social Service Superintendent, at the conclusion of the program delightful refreshments were served by the hostess. - Beat Field Day was held here Saturday. - Mr. and Mrs. W. E. Glenn of Louisville were guests of relatives here Saturday and Sunday. - The Stork made a visit to Mr. and Mrs. W. S. Permenter and left them a winsome baby girl on Tuesday, March 15. - Mr. D. M. McLeod and sister Mrs. M. E. Zink, the former of Terrell, and the later of Wills Point, Texas, are expected to arrive here Saturday on a visit to relatives. Their many friends will be glad to see them. - Miss Hassie Jackson of Bay Springs is at home on a two weeks vacation to the delight of her many friends.
Our community was shocked on last Friday by the sudden death of Mrs. Charlie Wilkes, which occurred at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Jess Estes, a few miles west of town. Mrs. Wilkes had been in ill health sometime but her death at this time was though to be a result of the excitement caused by the storm which entirely demolished their home a few nights previous. Our deepest sympathy goes out to the grief stricken husband and three children and many other relatives.
Mr. and Mrs. H. E. Hunt of Louisville were visitors in town Sunday. - Mrs. Carr of Louisville was a guest of her brother, Mr. V. F. Stark and family Sunday. - Mr. D. O. M. Glenn of Betheden spent the week end here with his brothers, R. H. and F. M. Glenn. - Miss Alma Lowry accompanied Miss Blanche Goad home Friday and spent the week end there. - Mr. ad Mrs. Green and children of Louisville were guests of the latter’s mother, Mrs. Tisdall here Sunday. - We note from the Newton Record that R. L. Stevens, native of our town has been promoted from traveling fireman on G. M. and N. R. R. to that of assistant road foreman of engines which carries with it an increase in salary. His friends will be glad to learn of his success. - Mr. H. L. Lawrence and family spent Sunday in the Rocky Hill neighborhood. - Messrs. J. C. Filer and Y. S. Commer left Wednesday as delegates to the W. O. W. Convention which convened in Jackson this week. - We are informed by Mr. S. A. Wilkins that he has found a sum of money. Owner can have same by making satisfactory claim. - Mr. and Mrs. W. M. Lawrence and children visited relatives at Hight Sunday. - Mr. and Mrs. Custus Lee of Plattsburg were visitors in town Tuesday.
