At the monthly Winston County Board of Supervisors meeting, Director of the Winston-Louisville Career Technical Center, Shane McDaniel came before the board with information about an apprenticeship program the WLCTC is beginning.
This program will place fifteen high school students (five from each high school in the district) enrolled in vocational classes in a work setting. These will be paid placements, and the monies for placements will be funded through the EPIC Work Experience Program/Accelerate MS Career Coach Program.
McDaniel wanted to place some of the participants in jobs at the Winston County Courthouse.
Board President Luke Parkes asked many pertinent questions about the program, such as the continuation of career coaches and the grade levels of the participants. McDaniel noted that the district is still working with career coaches at various campuses and that the participants are either juniors or seniors.
McDaniel further explained that these students will be on a work release program, and that they will sign out of school to go to work. He added that the purpose of the program is to “expose students to more things in Louisville and the county (by providing) valuable work experience.” McDaniel added that these students would be chosen based on not only enrollment but that they would be “well-behaved students who would be beneficial to” employees at the Courthouse.
McDaniel also shared that he has already reached out to many of the department heads at the courthouse, and that some department heads have already expressed an interest in participating, pending board approval.
Parkes noted that these types of programs are desperately needed in Winston County, and he added that vocational programs needed community support as they are training our future workers. Parkes also added that he was in a vocational program during his high school years, and that he learned valuable skills as a participant.
The board voted to go forward in participating in the apprenticeship program by allowing student workers in the courthouse.
The board also heard bids for the reseal project proposed to begin early next year. Upon hearing the bids, the board decided to table the bidding process and take said bids under advisement. They will vote on the bids at the November Supervisors meeting. The board then adjourned until the November 4 meeting.
