The December meeting was the last board member for District 3 Trustee Linda McDaniel and District 4 Trustee Ommie Ashford. McDaniel decided not to seek re-election and is retiring after serving on the board for three terms. Newly elected member Patrick Thomas of French Camp will succeed McDaniel.
Ashford, who served one term on the board, was unseated by Dr. Nola Bryant for the District 4 seat during the 2024 General Election. Thomas and Bryant will be sworn in and officially take their seats on the board at the January meeting.
McDaniel and Ashford were honored for their service to the children of Choctaw County during the meeting, which was held in the Learning Center. The teachers and paraprofessionals of the year for each school and the district teacher and administrator of the year were also honored during this meeting.
Also during the meeting, the board:
Approved a district transfer for Charlene Wasson from first grade at Weir Elementary to PreK at Weir Elementary, effective January 6. Wasson will replace Stephanie Howard who retired.
Approved the hire of Kristin Oswalt as a first grade teacher at Weir Elementary, effective January 6.
Principal Robbie Denson said before the break, Wasson had been spending time in the PreK class to get to know the students and Oswalt had been finishing up her internship in the first grade class so that she can get to know those students, so both would be ready for January.
Approved to add Brittany Fancher to the substitute teacher list.
