We kicked off our Summer Reading Program at Maben on June 8.
Our presenter was Stormin' Bob Swanson, the Singing Meteorologist. He teaches physics and astronomy at Mississippi State University, and does programs for libraries during the summer.
He is assisted by his two sons, Nate on the drums and Daniel, who is doing a documentary for school. Swanson sings mostly songs he has written about weather. He plays several musical instruments: guitar, banjo, harmonica and accordion.
His program consisted of songs about weather, various experiments showing air pressure and Bernoulli's principle, and a shop vacuum with a beach ball.
Swanson had Adalai Jones assist him with a rainstick and Linley Kate Reed with an experiment with water. She thought she was going to get wet but actually only a small amount dripped on her. He also had a telescope and showed the children sunspots through it.
If you missed him, Swanson will return July 20 and finish up our Summer Reading with an Eclipse Show.
Next week we will have the Oktibbeha County Soil and Water Conservation District presenting a program about bees at 10 a.m. June 22. Don't forget to bring book logs and be reading for the best prizes!
