The Maben Lions Club recently purchased and planted a flowering crab apple tree that soon will be in full deep rose-colored bloom.
Years ago a similar tree was planted and dedicated in honor of Dorothy Holland of Maben, who walks in the city park every day possible. That tree died and so the Maben Lions Club voted to replace that tree with a flowering crab apple tree, again in honor of Mrs. Holland.
The tree is located near the parking spaces along Chestnut Street, where it can be watered and cared for during the coming hot and dry summer months. One of the top priorities of Lions Clubs International is caring for the environment, so planting this tree fulfills the Maben club's effort to meet that objective.
Another project the Maben Lions are involved in is collecting gently used eyeglasses to be recycled for use by people who need them, mainly in other countries. If you have some pairs of glasses you would like to donate please bring them to Trace-Way Restaurant and place them in the Lions Club collection box near the inside front door.
Maben Lions Club will soon launch a new fundraiser selling a year’s worth of small individual floral arrangements by purchasing a membership card for $25 from the club. The card can be punched once a month for a year at Mathiston Florist to begin collecting your arrangements each month.
The club will use the funds to help local projects as well as the state Lions Eye Bank, which supplies corneas for eye surgeries. It is the only eye bank in Mississippi and serves as a model for other states when developing their own eye banks.
The Maben club also supports Leader Dog, a state-of-the-art facility for raising and training guide dogs that are made available to blind pep[;e in Mississippi and throughout the USA.
