Remnants of a loss against Nanih Waiya last week were still likely bothering head coach Jordan Smith when his East Webster team went to work the last three ball games.
The Wolverines let one slip away against the Warriors that they led by eight runs in the sixth inning but they’ve made sure to finish the deal since.
On that same day, the Wolverines beat Choctaw County at home and they carried that momentum into last week. The Wolverines (4-3) got two big wins in a rain-soaked week defeating Houston and Tupelo Christian on Friday at Northeast Community College.
Rain kept the Wolverines from playing the Hilltoppers at home earlier in the week but they were able to get a game in on a neutral field later in the week. They also had a game against French Camp Academy that was postponed due the heavy rains that came in early.
When they got their chance to get back on the field finally on Friday, they had to knock off some rust. Houston started the game with a 4-1 lead after scoring those four runs all in the second. But the Wolverines kept their approach at the plate and they began to produce.
EWHS scored five runs in the third and two in the fourth to take the game over and win it 9-5. The Wolverines played relatively clean defense with just one error, pounded out 10 hits and took advantage of four errors from the Hilltoppers.
Jesse Roberts, Cameron Pilgrim and Luke McKee finished with two hits in the game with McKee driving in two runs. Roberts, Jase Grantham and McKee hit doubles and Pilgrim had two triples as he continued to show his mixture of speed and power.
Gray McCarter started the game and threw 3.0 innings giving up just one hit and four runs which all were unearned. Six walks were an issue for him early in the game but he had four strikeouts. Chandler Hodges pitched a strong 4.0 innings, scattered four hits, one runs, two walks and four strikeouts.
In game two against TCPS, Smith and company saw flashbacks of the game against Nanih Waiya coming into play. The Wolverines scored a run in each of the first and second innings and four in the third to jump out 6-0. But TCPS scored five runs in the fourth and two in the sixth and seventh to tie the game up at 9-9 and send the game to extra innings where the Wolverines walked it off with a 10-9 victory.
Wes Silver led the way with three hits on two doubles and two walks and Pilgrim was solid again on Friday with two more hits in the game and an RBI and Roberts had two RBI on one hit.
The Wolverines threw Roberts, Kainan Reed, John Preston Springer and Anthony Medine in the win.
EWHS was set to have a busy day on Monday in games that took place after press time. They were scheduled to go to East Central Community College in Decatur to play Oak Hill Academy at 12:30 p.m. and then traveled to Louisville to play Winston Academy later in the day.
Unless there are any other changes, they aren’t scheduled for any other games during spring break.
